“This is THE place in Altrincham. Modern, absolute amazing selection of cans, 7 lines for draft beer, and they also serve food.“

“Serving quality cask and keg beer in food market. The seems to always be busy. The bar used to have better selection of cans.“

“Costello's Bar, Goose Green, Altrincham. Part of Dun ham Massey Brewery. Great Beers, But! The Management and Staff are unhelpful, Unaccommodating, and abusive! If you are disabled in any way, or in a wheelchair, due to there strict seating rules, you will be refused service as you are unable to move a chair out of position to place your wheelchair at a table or be accommodated for any type of disability and you will be asked to leave. And don't think it ends there! Expect further abuse in passing if you complain!“

“Underground bar with a classy private members club feel about it. You come here to enjoy company and the surroundings so you may feel like taking your time with your brew from the Low Countries in here and it's not the type of place you neck down a pint whilst stood at the bar! I had to leave Altrincham shortly after this place opened, so I was first in and the only one in around 5pm on Wednesday, despite this I enjoyed my selected bottle from Belgium. A lot of what you'll find on the menu is going to be familiar but this place is worth a visit all the same.“

“Shop unit conversion on the ground floor of a modern brick building just off the main road. It's fairly modern inside too with a row of cask ales featuring many of the regular brews from Dunham Massey brewery, with a seasonal or special possibly on depending on the time of year.“

“The prototype for the Blackjack bar that sprung up at Mackie Mayor in Manchester. This small bar in the converted Market Hall in Altrincham is among many other food and drink outlets around the exterior of the building, with communal seating central in this listed building. The bar is in one corner and serves both Blackjack and guest brews - cask and keg.“

“Large traditional pub building but looking a little worn on the inside. The drinks selection makes up for this and there's some local microbrews in here to enjoy in this multi-roomed venue.“

“Piss smelling clique. On the outside it smells of urine being down an alleyway. Inside it doesn't however but their kitchen facilities must be in the cellar, when the door is open, it stinks of sewage. Owner has 2 names either Wyn or Wayne, Rhys or Reece. Say no more! Extortionate prices. Parasols and empty beer crates put outside to endure or entice people in, giving the appearance of being busy. IT AIN'T! As an off licence or beer importer it works, as a bar think not “

“This quirky Belgian bar was quiet on our Thursday night visit. The only other drinkers in the pub was the owner and his partner who were keen to chat about all things beer and Belgium. It’s an atmospheric little place, being down in a cellar with continental music playing and subdued lighting. You can almost forget you weren’t in Belgium. Beers are brought to your table by attentive waitresses and are accompanied by complimentary snack of cheese and biscuits. The beer selection is amazing with a vast number of Belgian beers including rarities like Westvleteren. Modern beer styles from other countries can also be found. Prices a bit of a mix, but mostly reasonable for what you were getting. A brilliant place.“

“Not a pub or bar as such, but a serving counter within a market food hall. A pretty unusual place. One huge room with about 15 or so units selling artisan foods and drinks with seating in the middle shared by everyone. It’s worth going for food as well as beer as there were some tasty offerings available. Jack in the Box may be the tap for the Blackjack brewery, but it had lots of other breweries available on cask, keg and in bottle. Many were from the region, no bad thing given the thriving brewing scene in the Manchester area. The atmosphere was good, but it was crowded even on a Thursday night and hard to find a seat. I imagine it could get rammed on a weekend. I found service pretty slow on my visit. The selection was pretty good with interesting beer styles available and the prices were reasonable. Don’t miss it if you’re in Altrincham.“

“A bar inside the brilliant new food hall at Altrincham market run by Blackjack brewery. 4 cask and 8 keg options. Around 2-4 of these are usually Blackjack offerings with the rest made up of other UK craft. There’s no dedicated seating: it’s possible to stand at the bar but you can take a seat at one of the communal tables in the middle. Be sure to grab some food from one of the many food vendors inside the hall whilst you’re here.“

“Warm and quaint, I really enjoyed my evening here. Even though they had some nice beers, the menu is not very well thought out and the waitstaff had no real knowledge of beer the evening I was there. I liked the beer selection at Wyn’s new place much better, but I probably prefer the more rollicking atmosphere here.“

“This cozy cellar is worth a detour if you ever find yourself in Manchester. Great Belgian beers, and a stunningly inexpensive De Koninck, make for a very pleasant evening. I can’t say enough about the friendly service and charming interior.“

“A couple of blocks away from the main pedestrianised shopping street and opposite the market hall, this shop unit has neatly been converted into a Belgian style beer house. It’s quaint and laid-back with a number of small cramped tables between the window and the bar at the back. There’s quite a few more tables upstairs though so if the ground floor is full do not despair. The bar is only a couple of metres in length but packs in plenty of keg ales and beers, mostly from Belgium, and they’ve installed a hand-pump too which includes a locally produced craft ale. The lion share of beers are in bottles with the majority from the Low Counties complimented by other Western European beers as well as some from the States. Each table includes a beer menu which will take you quite a while to peruse given how much choice there is, and if you live locally it will take you a fair number of visits to sample all of what is on offer.“

“This shop in a pedestrian alleyway just around the corner from Le Trappiste is way too small for its own good. The ale selection here is niche and certainly worthwhile, and the proprietors take great care in presenting it on the shelves in fine fashion, however the place itself is tiny, and as there’s no desire to pack the bottles into a small space to sell as many as possible it’s hard to believe this place will survive - there’s just not enough choice to keep this place going long term. I’d love to be proved wrong though as it has plenty of character.“

“Excellent bottle shop owned by the same people as Morte Subite, great selection of Belgian German and UK beers and a good selection of glassware. They are very friendly and will sell you glasses from the bar to match your beer. They also have gift boxes and construct hampers. 2nd only to Bottle Stop in the NW“

“Situated on the main road just away from the shopping centre in Altrincham, this Wetherspoon is fairly non-descript with a familiar comfortable soft furnished layout. It’s average in size and can busy or quiet depending on the time day or day of the week. Real ale lovers can get their usual rotating selection although there’s a lot of regulars here, more so than local craft or specials.“

“This is a new venture from Wyn & Paul, the guys who run the drankecentrale import business. When I visited, the place wasn’t formally opened (hence no phone number and no sign outside) but Wyn & Paul had invited Ronald Mengerink of De Dochter van de Korenaar to meet some local beer enthusiasts and Mes tipped me the wink. Must seem a little odd to be located about three doors down the street from Wyn’s old place, La Trappiste. It is in the basement of the Fat Loaf restaurant and you enter through a side door. I imagine this will be a lot more apparent once the place is 100% operational. Over 200 beers, mainly Belgian, should be available, with some rarities for the UK - Slaapmutske, De Dochter van de Korenaar, Urthel, Achilles - not surprising as Wyn imports these - and a full range of Cantillon. Can only be an excellent addition to the UK Belgian beer scene as too many specialist bars carry the same range of, mainly mainstream Belgian, beers“

66 /100 OLD MARKET PLACE
“Building is more impressive from the outside than in. Interior is spacious but a bit scruffy. Not sure about the opening times as, although it is supposed to be open all day, the doors were locked at 6pm on a Tuesday when I visited. The beer is the main draw - 10 or 11 handpumps, all microbrews, plus the usual suspects on keg. Apparently they have live music at the weekends but I’m told its of the headbanging variety and at elevated volume, so beware if that’s not your thing.“

“Haven’t been in here for a while but always worth a visit if you have some time to spare in Altrincham. Was a bit quiter with no band playing but it was still quite early evening and was getting busy even at that stage. Good selection of ales and ciders available here.“

“I love this place. Wyn has moved on these days but he still keeps a watchful eye over this amazingly authentic Belgian Cafe. 12 draught beers (all Belgian, no interbrew), 100+ Belgian bottles including all the trappist beers (inexhaustable supply of Westy 8), a good lambic selection and plenty of rarites. Interior feels like you have just stepped off the Grand Place and is about as cosy and homely as I have experienced. In the summer all the windows at the front open to give a really pleasant outdoor feel and in the winter there is a great fire that has kept me warm many times. Only slight downside is the high prices but expect to spend a few pounds extra and you will be fine. It’s an awesome place and well worth a visit.“

82 /100 OLD MARKET PLACE
“This is not really the type of place where you go for a quiet pint. It is however somewhere you can go and choose from 11 real ales, a few ciders and a few decent bottles while enjoying some of the best live rock music you will ever see, let alone for free. Live bands are on Saturday and Sunday and you should be prepared for Motorhead levels of loudness. Beers are mainly from Bank Top and Archers so there is nothing amazing but I tried 9 pumps and they were all on sparkling form. If you love rock ’n’ roll and you love beer, when you are sat listening to a guitarist of Hendrix / Page standard (I kid you not) and he is recommending specific beers over the PA (Try the ... because it’s great) you know you are in the right place.“
