“On the south side of the elevated M62, this JW Lees pub is opposite another food oriented chain pub alongside a hotel. The white washed building that stands alone looks a little tired but it’s also deceiving as to the state of the inside as it’s very plush and well kitted out inside having clearly undergone a refurbishment recently. It’s a very welcoming decor and ambiance for it, relaxed with JW Lees ales available as well as their own lager and imported Czech brew exclusive to their pubs. Live sport is shown, albeit on a small screen, and there’s a decent beer garden here too.“

“Further up the same Huddersfield Road which is sister pub with the same name is on, this Sam Smith’s pub is a three roomed affair with the main one as you walk in also including the bar. This is the cosiest of all with good soft furnishings and an open fire and a small bar which packs in a fair selection of the brewers ales. There’s also a couple of the handcrafted bottle collection here. The range does not really differ than much to the other Bird in the Hand down the road but it’s got a slightly better atmosphere about it. The other ’bar’ room is square with small tables around its perimeter broken only by another open fireplace that also has darts board above it. There’s more than enough space for the oche as there’s nothing in the centre of the room.“

“The closer of the two Sam Smith pubs both called The Bird in the Hand, to the Metrolink station in the small urban conurbation of Newhey beside Milnrow. This one has a less conventional set up with a central bar in the building and a collection of irregular shaped areas on three of its sides, although there’s nothing particularly negative about this. It’s very much a locals place but is comfortable enough, although less cosy than its namesake and sister pub up the road. Service is on all three sides of the bar and there’s a fair selection of Sam Smith’s brews including a couple of the handcrafted bottle collection.“
