“Neat little brewery tap behind the Morrison's in Ramsbottom. There is a small drinking area downstairs and a couple of benches outside, but the large upstairs bar is where most people congregate. Seven Irwell Works beers - ranging from 3.2 to 5.5% - are complemented by a couple of ciders. I didn't see any bottles except for an unchilled two-bottle gift pack. Their beers are pretty traditional but very well put together, and of course they are wonderfully fresh here at the source. It's a cracking little place.“

“Pleasant and friendly micropub. They offer three handpull cask from independent traditional breweries. Also a variety of keg (mostly macro here although decent side of macro such as Beavertown and Kona). For the lovers of the apple there are a few ciders as well. The Wigan Brew House cask beer I had was in very good condition. It's decent enough but I wasn't tempted to linger. However it's worth checking to see what they are offering.“

“Twin floored micropub in a terrace shop unit on the main road through the commercial centre of a Ramsbottom. The main floor is the ground floor with its bar running along the left hand side of quite a narrow room, but there's regular seating towards the rear once it ends, and presumably downstairs although I didn't get down there. There's a very good mix of cask and keg from various microbreweries, backed up by a few bottles that may be of interest.“

“In an old, small twin-floored factory unit with the brewing taking place on the ground-floor, head upstairs for the open plan bar in an almost square room with windows on three sides. The bar mainly stocks its own cask ales, but there's ample of these including the odd special ale, but if unless you live in the area this is what you come for anyhow.“

“Visited on 16th April 2017. Same place as the First Chop and hasn’t changed much. Had a singer on downstairs that was piped upstairs and was loud but turned down on request, place was busy and had a nice buzz. Room for a few tables and chairs in the upstairs bar. 4 cask and 6 keg beers on. A decent and interesting selection with a focus on local brewers. Quality was good, service friendly. Prices decent. Liked this place although it’s pretty much the same as before!“

“Visited a few times and always seems to be busy with locals. Nice upstairs bar with a range if Irwell Works beer. Good turnover keeps the beer in good condition. Struggled to get a seat but still served quickly. Like the place and nice to try the beer next to the brewery. Worth the trip from Bury and only a couple of minutes to First Chop“

“Visited on a Saturday evening for dinner. The dining room was packed so ate in the bar. The food was excellent and really good value. Picked up a Ramsbottom craft brewery beer here which I haven’t seen around much. Bar staff were very friendly and helpful. Would go again to eat and stop by for a quick pint as had other local beers on too“

“A very pleasant pubby brewery taproom located above the brewery in what looks to have been a stone built small industrial building of Victorian age. All the current Irewell Works beers available on cask with few more in bottles. The beers are solid, if not mind-blowing. Don’t think they do food other than crisps and the like. Well worth a visit.“

A pleasant pub with four hand pumps on the fringes of Ramsbottom. The Major Hotel is old fashioned, if not olde worlde, with a cosy and comfortable lounge bar and a real fire in a woodburning stove. I noticed that they were burning not logs but old bits of wood with the nails still in them. The fireplace and chimney straddle what would originally have been two rooms and there’s also a public bar with a pool table. There’s an extensive food menu although no one was eating when we were there. (Visited 27 December 2012).“

“The Irwell Works Brewery tap room is upstairs above the brewery in a small stone building that was once an old metal works. It’s very pleasant, with a wooden floor, hops over the bar, whitewashed walls and old black and white photographs of the area. There are eight taps serving Irwell Works beer plus a Ribble Valley cider. There’s also a wide range of tasty non-alcoholic cordials. Bottles can be bought too. They’re not “big” beers but all the ones I’ve tried have been good and they score highly on drinkability.
Incidentally, don’t rely on sat-nav to find this place. Although the address is Irwell Street, it’s actually on Strang Street – a very short road which presumably was truncated at some point. Ramsbottom is a nice little stone-built town that’s been saved from the worst ravages of 1960s town planners except for where the Irwell Works sits in an area of land cleared for a clutch of supermarkets (Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi at the last count). For a novel way to get here you could travel on the East Lancashire steam railway which connects Heywood, Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall. (Visited 27 December 2012).“
