“Quite large JDW with a L-shaped bar and public room. Toilets facilities upstairs in the hotel section of the place. Very busy and noisy early on a Saturday evening, but we found a table and had a decent fish 'n chips for dinner. Quite good range of cask ales. Polite service and fair prices. (Visited with Finn, 11.02.2023).“

“On our stay they offered three cask ales, 12 beers on keg and a few ciders. The beer menu is listed on a chalkboard close to the entrance. Sample tray with three one-third pints. Übercool, cozy, and well kept classic British pub with different rooms. No music, and noisy mobile ringing is not welcome, according to messages on the tables. Friendly service by walking around. Located in a Tudor-like building towards the northern part of the town. Highly recommended. (Visited with Finn 11.02.2023)“

“A cozy, little, traditional English pub on a corner in central part of Canterbury. L-shaped bar and room with an open fire place in the middle. Colourful decorated, and with etches glass windows. From the windows we could see the church spire of the magnificent cathedral. Four interesting cask ales from local breweries on offer in addition to the taps and a few bottles and canned beers. Friendly service. Recommended by Harrisoni. (Visited with Finn, 11.02.2023).“

“"Beer is Beautiful" is painted on the wall right over the beer menu. Eleven of their own beers on tap plus one cider. More canned Floc. beers, and cans from other craft breweries in the fridge close to the serving bar. A modern, large, light, and airy taproom with the brewer plant to the right, and benches, long tables and a bar to the left of the entrance. More seating upstairs. Helpful service. About 15 minutes walk from the city center. In friendly company with Harrisoni and Finn, 11.02.2023.“

“13 of their own draugh beers, including five cask ales and one cider. Sample tray with five one-third pints. Two separate rooms with the serving bar to the rear, one of the rooms with high tables and chairs. Quite welcome and cozy interior with some nice dark and old wood works. Fair prices, and knowledgeable, serviceminded staff. Human League music in the background. Located close to the central part of Canterbury. In friendly company with Harrisoni. “Our one day out in Canterbury began with traditional breakfast at this spoons, close to the entrance to the inner part of town, and just a few minutes walk from the train station. Very tradition JDW, rather small, divided into different sections, quite cozy. 10 handpumps, polite service. Meet-up with Harrisoni. (Visited with Finn,11.02.2023).“

“Close to the city gate from which it takes its name, this smaller than its sister pub across the city Wetherspoon has a similar older style design for the chain, although fairly disappointing mostly regulars ale selection when I visited.“

“A couple of minutes walk down star street from the High Street, this is a well-oiled machine with lots of staff and an insistence on having a table for whatever purpose of your visit. it has a pub-like warehouse appearance and serves its own brews in cask and keg with a 5 beer taster tray also available.“

“Pleasant modern industrial unit with table and space and the bar close to its large shutter doors, which remain open in good weather. The actual brewing area is in the final third of the unit. Their own keg selection is complimented by a few guest brews.“

“Old school early traditional looking Wetherspoon design and welcoming enough. It's a large open plan room situated east of the Cathedral entrance and just before the city walls. Popular, busy and cheap - it packs in the tables around an 'L' shaped bar.“

“Looking like an independent fast-food restaurant when you walk in its central doors, of what seems to be a small shop unit, however a long row of keg ales against its side wall allays any fears you might be forced to eat here if you were only planning a drink. It has multiple rooms upstairs and is a better place to sup than downstairs where seating is limited.“

“In the suburban streets to the north of St Augustine's Abbey. This middle terrace pub is modern-traditional when you enter, with a light and airy conservatory area behind this. Beyond this is a beer garden. The bar in the front area has half a dozen options, some local, backed up by a few craft keg choices.“

“On a commercial street heading north out of the centre, this Tudor style building in and out is clearly aged. Its multi-roomed, split-level, low-ceilinged and has original fireplaces still evident. The most modern part is its purpose built front decking. There's no bar here, ordering is verbal and both cask and keg are served out of a back room. Real cider is also available.“

“In a narrow lane close to the Cathedral grounds opposite the Roman Museum. It's a long and thin that opens out into a traditional pub setting. Cask and keg options are mainly from Shepherd Neame. You can just about see the cathedral towers from the couple of tables pubt out front, but there's also an enclosed side alleyway terrace area.“

“In the city centre close to Westgate, it's dimly lit with a heavy wood design and features. It's not typically traditional but is close. There's a couple of rooms with the 'L' shaped bar in the first. Its selection is not great, mostly Meantime keg regulars, but the one cask was from Bedlam and was pleasing enough. Beyond the larger back room is a walled terrace area with a fair number of bench seats, but this area might get a bit smokey during busier times.“

Docker (Beer Store)
THE GOODS SHED, STATION ROAD W
“About 50 metres beyond the more elegant of the two main stations in the city, this railway goods shed of old, which has retained its name and plenty original features of the building. Now its is packed with farmers market style produce and fresh meats, as well as places to consume food and drink. Dockers is situated in the middle and sell craft cans with a decent enough selection - but they serve beer too, with a row of keg pumps available between you and the server.“

“Just outside the traffic heavy Westgate Tower in a shop unit converted into a cosy, dimly lit modern-traditional pub and bar. It's also a gin haunt with cask ales, but a few more keg ones available in all measures. Has a mix of local and far away craft brewers.“

“On the long pedestrian High Street close to Westgate, this is an updated pub in the traditional style with choices from the brewer on both cask and keg. A tourist trap given its location, you can eat standard pub fayre here and you can do it in the walled garden terrace at the rear if the weather allows.“

“Visited after lunch on Saturday 04/06/22. Spacious modern taproom around a 10 to 12 minutes walk from the centre of Canterbury which we navigated via an attractive riverside walk. 12 taps in total ... 8 Floc, 2 guest plus 1 cider ... 1 tap not on. Floc taps were a pils and all hoppy beers (they haven't brewed anything other than these styles to date) but one of the guests was a stout, the other a sour. 6 or 7 Floc beers and a few guests in a fridge to the right of the bar, merchandise available if thats your thing. Indoor and outdoor seating in an industrial setting the place was less than half full and as such service was prompt. Food also available in the form of various burgers including veggie. Overall a solid modern taproom serving on point hop forward beers.“

Docker (Beer Store)
THE GOODS SHED, STATION ROAD W
“Visited on Wednesday 15/09/21 after having had an excellent lunch at the Goods Shed restaurant. Docker has been in the Goods Shed since May 2021 having taken over the spot formerly held by the Bottle Shop (closed March 2021). Simple set up offered here ... 4 taps (3 on our visit but expect 4 on the weekend) which were 2 of their own beers from the Docker brewery and a guest (lager from Dig Brew), 60-80 cans/bottles and good quality sourdough bread (we picked one up and it was decent). Good range of craft cans ... think Verdant, Deya, Cloudwater plus more local offerings and half a dozen from their own brewery. Friendly and knowledgeable service from a native of Los Angeles ... whats not to like? You can also sit outside on table and chairs with your beer or just stand and chat as I did.“

“Visited for lunch on Tuesday 14/09/21. Note this venue has moved site in the last year or so and now occupies the site of the now closed Old Brewery Tavern. Set in an old 19th century style factory/warehouse the Foundry brewpub has plenty of atmosphere and is set across 2 rooms with plenty of space. Around 15 of their own beers on tap, a mix of cask and keg, and sample flights of 5 thirds available for £9.90 (extra cost levied if drinking beers at 6% ABV+). The beers were all fine ... nothing blew me away ... think 3.2-3.5 scores ... competent cask offerings and wanna be craft that didn't quite hit the mark compared with what I'm used to. Good friendly service and the place was pretty busy ... main room all but full ... side room still lots of space. We had some BBQ style food for our lunch which hit the spot. They also distill various spirits of their own which I think included a number of gins, tequila and vodka. Overall a solid stop and worth taking in a tasting flight with some food.“

“Visited on Wednesday 15/09/21 over lunch. Located inside the Goods Shed at Canterbury West station and next to Docker (the former Bottle Shop). Ok selection of trad style Kentish beers and ciders but the action for the average ticker will be in Docker located in the neighbouring unit.“

“Visited twice on both Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th September 2021 around 1730 - 1900 on both occasions. Small beer situated beyond Westgate so 7/8 minutes from the Cathedral and just a 3 or 4 minute stroll from Canterbury West station. For me this was the best bar in town by some way ... choice of 12-14 keg taps on my 2 visits with offerings from the likes of Wylam, Verdant, BBNo, Wiper & True, Pig & Porter and Hammerton. On my 2nd visit I knew in advance that they were holding a mini Pacific NW tap takeover so 3 fresh hoppy numbers from Gigantic were offered alongside a pale from Urban Hopworks and Fremont Dark Star. Thirds available on all pours if required. The bar has a lot of funky bits of furniture and fittings with coat hangers made from old shower heads and taps and two rows of 4 reclining former cinema seats. As well as the solid beer range (also some cans/bottles allied to the 12-14 taps) there are 100 plus gins and some decent wines so this helped my visit setting Sharon up with stuff she liked. Service was prompt and friendly. Quiet on the Tuesday but getting busy on the Wednesday (as seemed to be the case with most of Canterbury). Must visit for me!“

“Visited on Tuesday 14/09/21 around 3pm. Centrally located it seems things have changed here somewhat since the previous reviews. The beer list was entirely formed by 8 Time & Tide beers crossing all style and ABV levels and served in attractive Time & Tide glasses (that get pinched a lot according to the bar man!). So whilst not owned by T&T they are affiliated and are pretty much a taproom outlet for said brewery so I have amended the master listing to reflect this. Things could of course change over time so watch this space. Aside from the T&T offerings (all keg) there were also 2 Kentish Pip ciders on tap. The place is set over two floors and primarily a pork themed restaurant ... food looked good but we'd already eaten so just stopped for a beer. Well worth checking out and 4 or 5 new T&T beers for me that ultimately didn't have time to get through.“

“Super cosy small establishment, visited 8/I/19 with the misses. Inside is divided in a few small rooms, we sat in the one with a very nice wood stove adding hugely to the atmosphere. The owner comes to take your order, and bring your drinks to the table. As a Belgian this is nothing special, but apparently it's a rare thing in the UK. ;-) Quite a nice beer menu, around 10 beers on draft, another 10 on cask and a bottle list with a few dozen beers, including quite some Alvinne beers. Had a scotch egg as a snack, which was nice, if I remember correctly from a local butcher. Very nice place, super cosy, nice value for money, I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Canterbury. Hell, this is even worth a detour, if you can combine it with a visit to the Pork & Co taproom!“

“Visited with the misses 3/1/19. The bar and seating are located in what looks and feels as sort of a big entry hall of an old industrial building. The place was very cold, there was just one small electrical stove to which we sat as close as possible, so we were ok, but we felt bad for anyone else that had to endure the cold. Everything is dark and black, which makes for a very high contrast with the bright daylight that was pouring in. The result wasn't very cosy, maybe that's different when there's no daylight. The beer selection was rather disappointing as almost half of the beers on the menu was not available. I mean, c'mon, we come to the actual source of the beer! Both the gin list and wine list had many more options available! Staff did inform us about the missing beers right away, so kuddos to that. Food was good, with a very good price value. Quite a bit of vegetarian options, which was highly appreciated. We had a bit of a problem with one plate, which was handled very professionally and quickly by both staff and kitchen, so no need to elaborate on that. The beers I found rather mediocre, which makes a revisit for me rather unnecessary. Oh yeah, I bought one bottle to go, from the fridge. But the advertised bottle prices apparently didn't apply for the high ABV stout, which meant that I was suddenly charged more than double than the price mentioned above the fridge... Not sure what the UK regulations are on this, so I didn't make a fuss about it, but in Belgium I wouldn't have let this pass.“

“This rating is for the tap room, I really feel like we should either split this into two locations, or just specify to "the Tap Room". ;-) Small but very cosy interior with lots of wood, some old records on display (for sale??), good music playing (think classic 70ies - 90ies rock and alternative music). Attended on a weekday at 11am, there was just one staff member prepping take-out meals and taking our orders as we were the only seated customers. Very friendly bloke, quick with serving both drinks and food. Only had an appetizer, the pulled pork nacho plate, which was beyond excellent! A nice tap list of 12 craft beers and 2 Kentish Pip ciders, a lot of Time and Tide mixed with some classic modern crafts (think Tiny Rebel, BBN, Partizan). Really enjoyed myself here! They do 1/3rd pints as well, which I consider a huge advantage.“

“Just around the corner from the Cathedral entrance, this is both a restaurant on the right and a takeway/taproom on the left. 14 craft beer taps with 12 rotating. You can sit and drink beers without having to order food, although the food looks really good. Busy Saturday afternoon when I went but was well looked after by the staff even though I only wanted to try the beers.“

“New tap room that came in place of the now defunct Mouton Rouge. Provides 12 taps (key-keg only) from local and national craft beer brewers. Has had some Northern Monk, Cloudwater along with other more local items such as Angels and Demons. 2 of the taps are cider, normally from Kentish pip. The bar does a full range of Gins and a range of wines. The intention is to have a range of canned craft beers, at which point I will review my rating. Comfortable seating and knowledgeable staff, complete the picture. Can get very busy at peak times when seating will be at premium. All in all a welcome addition to the Canterbury scene.“

“Literally stumbled across this place 'Tomas Tallis' - fairly quiet on a weekday afternoon when me and the mrs arrived. You sit at a table and read the menu and the beer is brought to you by the staff. No mobiles! Fined for being on a mobile - cracking! The beers I had were nearly all keykeg and thus in good condition and were reasonably priced. Whiled away a very pleasant few hours here and I would definitely return if I found myself back in Cantebury.“

“14th Aug 2018, afternoon visit. Wooden floor, two rooms and a patio out the back. Seemed to be a bit basic and leaning towards a student vibe. Barmaid wasn't very interested in us, the only other customer being her main attraction. Cask ales (three on offer), the two we tried were in poor condition and we left after one drink.“

“14th Aug 2018. Early evening visit. very busy ground level with not enough over worked staff, up stairs was calmer but also fairly busy. Plenty of student types use this place. Anyway it's a typical big Wetherspoon set up with the usual staffing issues and less 'guest ales' than was the norm in the past. In fact there was only one new beer for me to try. Food was fine, the Gin & Tonic that came with it finished us off, and we aborted our pub crawl and when back to our hotel for the night.“

Liked it, would have stayed for more, but we were on a mission!“

“A brewpub with quite a large footprint within an old 19th century factory just off the main drag in Canterbury. Very popular for food I noticed with just about all the tables taken up inside with diners, however there is a pleasant patio area where drinker appear to congregate in the sunshine. The staff are friendly and pleasant and the 5 glass taster is worth doing, you mark your requirements off on a sheet and they bring it to your table, it's quite a spectacular version of a paddle, more a bridge of beers. The beers are a bit samey though, apart from a special that they had on. Well worth a visit, but not the best in Canterbury.“

“Just across the inner ring road, an easy walk, apart from the road crossing, from the Thomas Tallis Alehouse. This is more a locals, cum office workers meeting up pub as its well away from the scrummage that is central Canterbury, not in distance but in feel. “Is it or isn't it a Micro Pub? Not sure but it really doesn't matter, this is in the style of the old alehouses that used to be plentiful around the country, wet only, you place your order and the Landlord or whoever is serving you goes and fetches the beer from the back or cellar and delivers it to your table. Feels old but is relatively new and the beer range is modern and on trend as they say, with a plethora of crafty kegs to choose, from across the UK, and beyond I hear, but not on my visit. The cask beers were all local and well kept, there are also a list of bottles to be had. There appeared to be 2 rooms, one with an annexe or snug, no extraneous noise other than conversation. A cracking, no nonsense but friendly & knowledgeable Landlord. Highly recommended.“

“Largish Wetherspoons between the Bus Station and tourist central Canterbury that is the Cathedral. Very popular for getting cheap scram down your neck, you know what you are going to get and it's fine. The beer range was quite small on my visit, just a couple of local(ish) bitters available, but this appears to be the way that Wetherspoons are moving. Hectic and loud but its okay.“
