“Along the higher but slower alternative route to the main road between Rossendale and Bacup, this pub at the top of a steep climb is right next to the Blue Bell pub which has sadly now closed. This pub is a large open one room affair with seats either side of the central entrance as well as a few beside the big screen television on the rear wall. There’s was only a handful of people in on my visit and all were on the bar stools at the serving area against the left-side wall in the middle of the room. They advertise Moorhouses ales on the wall outside and three of the four pumps are given over to this breweries drinks with the fourth rotating guest ales. The pub is very traditional in style with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. There’s an open fire here and a rear patio area with picnic tables.“

“Sandwiched between the two main roads that run east-west within these Pennine foothills, the best way to find this pub is to keep an eye out for the Jolly Sailor as the entrance is directly opposite the rear garden of this pub. This is very much a multi-purpose building with accommodation provided if you need it and a comfortable restaurant seating area to the rear with fine views across the valley given its elevated position. The main drinking area at the front is open plan is its style is somewhere between traditional pub and bar, and certainly closer to the latter in terms of its fixtures and furnishings, however there’s a very familiar ’pub’ selection of drinks including 4 cask ale pumps that have a Lancashire/Yorkshire bias as both Moorhouses and Copper Dragon seem to be well represented here. The very low ceiling and low lighting combine to give the place a certain ambiance and the live football is shown here too.“

“Close to the Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School which the rear beer garden of this pub faces. The Jolly Sailor is a traditional pub with a slightly more spartan wooden look more associated with Irish bars, but no less of a destination for it. Indeed it has six ale pumps and although not all may be used there should be a decent selection here from local breweries. Most of the seating is geared up towards dining with larger rectangle tables perfect for eating throughout the open ground floor space. There is a separate area where a pool table exists too.“

52 /100 701 BACUP ROAD ROSSENDALE
“On the main road out to Bacup amongst a small commercial area this is a fairly large pub in terms of area although the central pool table means seating is mainly around the edges of this carpeted and soft-furnished public house. The decor is a little durable as oppose to older traditional but the buildings older features such as two big fireplaces (one still with a roaring fire in winter) break up the look, and the black and white photographic stills of local area help the ambiance. The pub advertises real ales and its true to its word with a well kept Moorhouses available here amongst an otherwise dull selection, but this part of Rossendale is lacking in choices for craft ale so it’s worth a look in if you’re in the area. There’s a couple of picnic tables out front which give a great view of the traffic although the beer garden at the rear is a better option.“
