“Small brewery tap at the end of a small pedestrian lane off the centre of the now pedestrianised Friargate. It's a quaint almost square room entered through patio type doors with brewing equipment down one side and the built in bar opposite. There's quite a few places to sit in between. Plenty of their own brews should be available, and some guests, especially canned options in a fridge that could also be taken away. They don't do taster trays but all are available in third options if you want to try and go through them all.“

“Classic industrial unit brewery taproom. 2 cask and 10 keg lines. Roughly 50% brewed on site, guests mostly local, but also the inescapable Vault City guest "sour". Friendly welcome, and close to other good beer places worth a visit. I was the only customer for the first half hour or so of my visit.“

“Fairly standard format micropub adjacent to the Guildhall on the street between the market and Fishergate. It’s a former shop and the large glass windows give it a very airy feel. The bar is on the left, and the rest of the (quite) small space includes a selection of tables, chairs and stools. An archway at the rear gives access to another small unusual shaped room that is similarly furnished. The main room also has a piano, but I’m not sure if that is featured in the advertised “occasional live music”. Apparantly there is more room upstairs ubt I have never been. There are a total of 7 hand-pumps. These serve an every changing selection of mainly local beers. There’s is always dark beer, though on my latest visit I was disappointed to find it was Titanic Plum Porter. There is no food or TV. This is still a decent venue, but no longer as pioneering ss it once was. “

“An architectural gem of a pub run by Robinsons. Flat iron shaped halfway up the hill on the southern half of Friargate. You know it is going t be something special when the name of the pub is spelt out in a mosaic on the tiled floor in the entrance. The mosaic continues throughout the pub. There are two rooms (one left, one right) immediately after the entrance both featuring much use of dark wood and plenty of old photos on the walls. The outstanding feature though is the huge ornate circular ceramic bar counter that is off to the right. More seating around this (it was originally the public bar). Straight on past the bar is a small alcove featuring mirrors. There is also more room upstairs, though I have never been, and I believe there is a rooftop terrace ! In terms of beer there are a total of 10 handpumps, 3 or 4 of which are from Robinsons. The rest are an ever changing selection of guest ales. These are sourced by Titanic, so usually include one or two of theirs. There is normally at least one dark beer. They used to be famed for always having Robinsons Old tom on tap, but this is now no longer possible. Instead they have recently celebrated “Old Tom Day” when it returned for the winter. The only food is large pork pies. The changing guest ales means it’s quite likely you’ll find a tick or two here, but the real point of any visit should be to marvel at the architectural splendour ! “

“Small Craft beer bar just off the inner ring road – from Fishergate it’s right at the far end of Lune St. There are a few tables and chairs outside – which is more than can be said for the inside ! It really is quite small, and the bar takes up most of the right hand side. The only seating in the rest of it is some high stools connecting to a narrow ledge that runs around the whole place. There is also an upstairs with more comfortable seating, but access that you need to go back out of the main bar almost into the street. Toilet (note the use of the singular tense !) is also upstairs. In terms of beer there are 10 craft keg lines (which includes a cider) in the wall behind the bar, and 4 cask handpumps on the bar. In terms of what beers to expect I can’t really give advice because on my visit they were in the middle of a Siren Caribbean Chocolate Cake tap takeover. No less than 4 different versions on that beer were available ! Didn’t include a cask version though – those were all pale ales (sigh). There was also a fridge filled with bottles, but I didn’t investigate further. Staff were also very helpful and patiently explained the differences between all the chocolate cakes ! Nice place. I’ll certainly be returning on my next visit to Preston. “

64 /100 139-141 MARKET STREET WEST
“Craft brewery taproom located just outside the inner ring road in Preston. Market Street West links the inner ring road with the northern half of Friargate. Whichever end you start from you’ll have to walk uphill to get to Chain House ! (From the ring road it’s on the left). Quite easy to miss the only signs are a couple of barrels out on the payement, and a small door with an illuminated sign saying “open”. Once inside it is very much an industrial unit containing the brewery with bare walls and suspended lighting. The bar is on the left and the gleaming brewery kit is on the right. Inbetween there are a few tables and a selection of bench and stools serving them. In terms of beer there are two hand pumps at the side of the bar and a row of 10 craft taps in the wall behind. The beer list is chalk written on boards to the left – and contains a total of 14 beers / ciders ! I’m not sure where the missing 2 are served from. Main of the bers are their own, but there are also a few from the likes of Little Monster and Thornbridge. [ The cask beers were from First Chop and Utopian on my visit ] The only food I could see on offer were scotch eggs. It’s OK but a bit basic. You should certainly get a tick or two here though ! “

“On the soon to be pedestrianised Friargate with two defined areas although open plan, this is a modern shop unit conversion of a public house, so not quite a micropub, and seems to be a popular locals haunt. Has three often seen cask ales available.“

Bears Paw (Bar)
42 CHURCH ST
“In the undeveloped eastern section of the main street through the city centre, this is an old school locals pub with no cask, only macro brews available. In its own traditional building with a worn traditional appearance the best reference I can give is it is a great example of how many public houses used to be like in the late 20th century if you're after a heritage experience.“

Old Vic (Bar)
78 FISHERGATE
“Classic old pub within spitting distance of the station. 8-10 cask beers available, unfortunately most being the "boring bitter" type. Not the most exciting place but worth a look if you need to kill time before a train.“

“Fairly classic Wetherspoons, perhaps distinguished by the truly gruesome architectural exterior. Inside, it’s exactly what you’d expect, no more no less. Couple of nice pints on offer, hard to complain!“

“Visited on 21st November 2021. 5 mins from station. 2 roomed pub. Main room has bar and barstools around outside. Upstairs is quieter and more comfy seating. Nice, smart decor. Typical of modern craft beer micro. 10 keg taps, 4 cask. Fridges full of decent ale. Good range. Staff friendly. Service good. Nice place. Definitely pop in.“

“Regular urban pub down a side street that has a couple of wickets at the bar, but everything is macro produced. Shows all the football so maybe of interest to some. Fairly small front facing room with bar.“

“Fairly ordinary urban pub selling lots of mass produced beer to the masses. A good place to play pool or watch the football though if you so wish. Regular Thwaites ales are sold here.“

“Cosy cafe-bar styling eatery, beer house and cocktails, a bit of everything really in nicely restored pseudo period fixtures and fittings. A tad too crowded on my visit, with bodies making it very difficult to get up to and to the front of the bar on the raised service area. Has some very worthwhile crafted beers in its selection.“

“On the fringe of the shopping area just before the main road that separates this from the multiple bars close to the University area of the city, this is a micropub that has four cask pumps and gets into double figures with its keg lines, backed up by plenty of craft cans. The ground floor bar area doesn't leave a great amount of room to drink, but there's a few stools available, I didn't get to the other room but it's clear there will be a lot more seats available in there.“

Vinyl Tap (Bar)
28-30 ADELPHI STREET
“Corner pub in terraced area not too far behind the imposing Adelphi pub. Although an older building this music venue has definitely had a modern makeover inside, although still traditional enough in design. Its long bar against the inner wall has a row of ale pumps with some good local and regional crafted brews available, also craft cans in the fridge.“

Adelphi (Bar)
43 FYLDE ST
“Large pub overlooking the traffic island it faces, traditional in design, although slightly warn looking, probably as this looks like a popular student venue, it's certainly in the right place for it to be that. Nevertheless it has a row of worthwhile ale pumps at the long bar at the back of the main ground floor room. Has a garden area at the rear.“

“Micropub on one corner of the covered market area next to the Town Hall, has an inside and outside, with the latter sheltered by the aforementioned market roof. It's very modern looking with plenty of taps, mostly keg, lots of crafted beer.“

72 /100 56 LANCASTER ROAD
“Behind the Town Hall just a few yards up the street from the Guild Hall, this is a shop unit conversion into quite a neat and welcoming enough micropub. It's a standard unit size with the bar at the back, allowing you sit and people watch through the large commercial windows that cover the whole of its frontage - with more room upstairs. The selection of cask ales is good, expect local and regional efforts backed up by keg and bottles.“

62 /100 37 CANNON STREET
“Came here for the beer, not the Wings in this slightly cramped multi-television American style sports bar - although it's still British enough in design not to be completely alien to the area. There's a row of cask ale pumps at the bar with local options so it's worth a look, especially if you want to watch the football or other sports with a drink or filling food.“

56 /100 30-34 AVENHAM ST
“Old back street brick building but modern design on the inside, it's perhaps more of a late night venue, but is open early, although may prove a little lonely on some afternoons. Real ale is available though with several pumps across the middle of the bar - something local was available.“

38 /100 118 CHURCH STREET
“At the far eastern end of the main shopping street, this pub is probably the cheapest place in town to drink and attracts a few 'characters' for it. It's huge though around a large central bar so it's easy enough to find your own space. A visit here is for the old school venue and atmosphere and not for the beer as it's not a destination.“

Moorbrook (Bar)
370 NORTH ROAD
“Multi-roomed traditional ale house on the A6 North out of the city centre. It's a good walk from the main action but possible. Standing on its own just before a road junction it's well appointed on the inside and has certainly had a makeover in recent times and there's plenty of ale choice, good local options and some real ciders too, so well worth the detour.“

76 /100 NEW MARKET HALL
“Small stall in the open but covered market area close to the Guildhall and Town Hall. There's only a couple of brews from Priest Town available here but there's all manor of styles and specials from the funkiest breweries in the North-west region so it's well worth a look.“
