76 /100 67B HIGH STREET, STARBECK
“Former high street shop converted into a micropub, just up the hill towards Knaresborough from the railway station. Nice little venue with a bar along one side and seating spread around, up to 4 real ales on hand pull along with a couple of craft keg offerings, usually all pretty local, with an array of bottles and cans in the fridges. Staff are friendly, just learning the business after only opening mid-2023. Has a small terrace out front which is quite a pleasant place to sit and watch the world go by (albeit set back from a busy road).“

“[Visited Aug 2022] Forgot to rate this when I visited last year. Nice little tasting room with outside seating on a fairly main road near many other spots. Small taplist of mostly their own stuff, but some guest taps in there too. 1/3 pints available, plus staff are happy to give tastes. Service is friendly but rather inattentive and sloppy -- got charged too much initially, and it took me inquiring to realize the mistake. Beer was mediocre at best, with nothing standing out. Not a great spot beer-quality-wise, but it's a decent hangout place.“

“Nicholson's pubs have suffered since the lock down, so when I entered this busy establishment to see a relatively interesting display of casks, I got quite excited. It seems to be the laddish pub in town, so I didn't feel like lingering due to the atmosphere alone. While the beers had more guests than most Nicholson’s (Black Sheep, Belfast's Hercules,By the Horns), there's nothing that can't be missed, and my pint of cask was pretty woeful. It's a slight detour out and probably not really worth it.“

“Lovely traditional pub which seems to do a good trade in food. Brown bar, brown tables, brown floor, but it works. The Meatloaf soundtrack seemed a little out of place but I loved that. Extremely friendly bar staff. Seven cask ales and a couple of decent keg are complemented by about 10 bottles, including Leicestershire's Tynt Meadow. They like their Rooster here, with about five beers in the draught and packaged options. There are good low and no alcohol options as well. It's a decent place although some of the casks are widely available (e.g. Landlord), but that just means there is something for everyone.“

“North taprooms seem to be popping up all over the place. One of them are spectacular while others take a little bit more of a backseat. I really like this bar but it lacks the wow factor of many others in the chain. Perhaps it is because they've got a Fierce takeover (and it's their tamer stuff mostly) when I went in. Anyway it's 12 keg and 2 cask, pretty sessionable-led which is no bad thing. Very light and airy on this Saturday morning with loads of seating outside. The next door Pizza Social restaurant is connected. Not a must but I'd recommend swinging by.“

“Airy upstairs bar with a real Bohemian feel to it. Very family-friendly and laid-back, it feels a world away from the staid faded glory of much of Harrogate. Beer's good: four cask from the likes of Pentrich and Rooster, with a decent selection of about 6 keg (e.g. Turning Point, Marble). Halves are notably more expensive (relatively) than pints. They do pizza because of course they do. A fun bar.“

“The entrance to this bar looks like a prison! But upon I section it's a place I wouldn't mind serving time. Dark and moody in the best way, there's some patio seating out back which is glorious in the sunshine. The beer list is onthe small side but there's some lovely stuff. Overtone, RedWillow, Two by Two, Saltaire are some of the breweries represented in the five cask and five keg. Not I possibly priced either, even for the third ofOvertone TIPA I opted for. Fantastic whisk(e)y list too. On the Harrogate 'A' list.“

80 /100 5 STATION SQUARE
“This little pub seems to be one of the new players in town. It's got a modest room with a small bar at the back on the ground floor, and more seating downstairs where the toilets are. A very commendable beer list of 9 keg and two cask. Marble, Cloudwater, Burnt Mill, Kees and Verdant at your fingertips. The two fridges are full of Continental and British delights, with a decent low/no alcohol selection. Prices are dear, and there's a corkage fee for packaged beers. So many good places in Harrogate but this is one of the better ones.“

“Blink-and-you-miss-it bar on the pedestrianised Beulah Street. It's small a pretty dark inside although there are four small tables where you can watch the world go by. Really friendly and upbeat place. The beers (3 cask and 7 keg plus a keg cider) range from 3.4 to 14% and hail from breweries such as Turning Point and Vault City. It is considerably dearer than other places I've tried in Harrogate; I'd say it's about in line with my favourite haunts in Leicester. I probably could spend an afternoon here. Maybe worth slightly more than a cursory stop if in town.“

72 /100 STATION PARADE, HARROGATE STATION
“Ah, the Tap pubs (York, Sheffield, Piccadilly). And now Harrogate. I'm so grateful for them, but they pose a few issues. Fiest, they are a victim of their own success: any time after 5 on a Saturday and they'll generally be rammed, which affects atmosphere as well as the service. Second, they are brilliant pubs but the beer scene has improved and they have ge wally been left just that little bit behind. Third, mam they ain't cheap. Anyway, the HarrogateTap on a Saturday afternoon feels very similar in layout to its Sheffield counterpart but smaller, less ornate and less urine-smelling. The beer list is smaller too but you'll find plenty to drink albeit at a premium hitherto unseen in Harrogate. UK royalty and all around good breweries such as Siren, Buxton, Shiny and New Bristol are represented here on cask and keg. Plus, if you're travelling you can get to your train in a matter of minutes. The Harrigate Tap certainly serves an important purpose, and the beer is good. I'd recommend it but of course it is on your itinerary already.“

58 /100 TOWER STREET,
“Decent enough place to the south of the train station. A little bit old fashioned with a two-room setup although the bars don't have a 'public' and 'lounge' feel. Most of the pump clips are on a room to the left but there's a beer board in the room to the right. Six cask, six keg and four cider but nothing at all out of the ordinary. Settled for a Lagunitas Day Time. Pleasant enough place but absolutely can be missed out.“

“Warehouse-feel with exposed concrete floors and blaring piped music but still manages to be family-friendly. As you walk in theres a bar to your right and food point on your left (you can order food at your table though). You can go through to the left to a larger seating area. They were serving a katsu curry/bao bun menu, not sure if this is permanent or if it rotates. Service was a little cursory but that happens sometimes. The beer list itself doesn't get my blood pumping - Seven safe styles by their own brewery plus Aspalls cider. I opted for the lager, which was very good, but it didn't tempt me to stay. A few bottles and cans but nothing too incredible. Ticks to be had here for sure but on its own merit might be worth a short stop only.“

“Nice place, if a little bit odd. Light and airy due to the large windows out front. During busy times you have to wait to be seated, which felt weird as it has a modern cafe feel. I suppose they do fill up. The beer list is decent with about six cask and as many keg. Some interesting stuff here such as a Vocation flavoured stout and one of Vault City's crazier sours, but the main focus does seem to be on hoppy pales. Not cheap but also not impossibly expensive. Would've scored higher except for the initial awkwardness when coming in.“

72 /100 UNIT H5 FIFTH AVENUE, HORNBEAM PARK
“This is a large Factory Unit at the far end of an Industrial Estate to the South of the town. We visited on a wet day, so necessarily stayed inside the unit, the taproom area takes up roughly a third of the factory, has lots of seating. The bar is just inside after going through a reception area, there is a small garden area to the rear. The beers are all Roosters, no guests, but with quite a few of their small batch run beers available. There is a small kitchen where different outlets hire it for a few days, we had food there which was pretty good. There also seems to be a conference room which can be hired for larger events. It is popular with a good turn over of people through the day and a pleasant atmosphere, if a little echo'y. Well worht seeking out for an afternoon.“

“This is a long, narrow bar pretty close to the bus and train stations. Rather restricted opening hours during the week but opens at lunch time on the weekend thankfully. There are stools along the bar with small seating areas to each end and outdoor seating in Beulah Street. Nice and friendly with a decent range of beers, although restricted due to the size of the place. Well worth a look if it is open.“

“Large and rather spectacular Wetherspoons in what was the Harrogate Spa bathing houses. High, domed glass ceilings with a marble staircase leading down to the bar. All the Wetherspoons paraphernalia tends to detract from the look but at least there is some preservation going on. Otherwise pretty standard Spoons, slow bar service, sticky carpets, uncleared tables.“

“Micropub just off the centre of Harrogate. Slightly confusing outside as you are not sure if you are entering a restaurant, which is upstairs, or the pub. Once in however the bar is towards the far end, the beers posted on boards to the right. Necessarily a restricted list due to the size but still plenty to go at. There is a small patio, garden area to the rear. It certainly is a pleasant place to visit whilst in Harrogate.“

“A L-shaped bar serving six cask ales and eight craft beers on tap. Some interesting local breweries among the cask ales, all of them I had was in perfect condition. A very traditional English pub with a good vibe on a Thursday afternoon. Polite service. Located in the outskirts of the town centre, but not more than about ten minutes walk from the train station. Well worth a visit. (07.07.2022)“

“Modern craft beer bar/cafe connected to North Brewing in Leeds. Located on a corner in central part of town, not far from the railway station. 14 taps, mostly from North Brewing supported by a few guest beers. Canned beers in the fridge to take away. I had a delicious cheese board here, and was served by very friendly young people. Nice outdoor seating in front of the entrance, especially on a sunny day like this; Thursday 07.07.2022.“

“Central located micropub offering ten cask ales, in addition to a few craft beers. Their beers can be served in thirds. Also good for whisky options. A few seating at the ground floor, some more in the cellar, and outdoor seating in front the pub. There is also a sunny bier garden to the rear of the bar. Traditional pub interiors, no music at my stay. Polite service. (Visited 07.07.2022).“

“A rather large, airy place with high ceiling located just in the outskirts of the town center, entrance from King's Road, Outdoor seating in front of the main room. Three of their own beers were on at my stay. Altogether three cask ales, and at least 12 beers on keg. The draught beers can be bought in thirds. Service minded barmaid who told me about their brewery and their beers. Relaxing atmosphere early on a Thursday afternoon. (Visited 07.07.2022).“

“First stop on a beer and pub crawl in Harrogate. The entrance is just outside of the railway station. A well kept, stylish, elongated room and bar offering 12 cask ales, and more than 15 beers and ciders on tap. Their tap beers can be obtained in thirds, the cask ales are served in pints and half pints. Outdoor seating in front of the entrance. Polite service. Really good drinking session with music from Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix Experience and others in the background. Short train ride from Leeds. (Visited 07.07.2022).“

74 /100 UNIT H5 FIFTH AVENUE, HORNBEAM PARK
“At the far end of the industrial estate on the southern side of Harrogate, it's beyond an entertainment area that is the first part of Hornbeam Park, which has its own train station if you don't want to undertake the fair walk from the town centre. This is a large tap room and is just one part of a large brewing premises. They serve food here too if you want something to go with the cask and keg on offer from the brewer at the bar, which is just to the left after you enter. There's also a beer garden at the rear.“

“Just behind the main North-South drag on a street for night revellers in the town, it's quite a predictable place given it's a chain so don't have high expectations in here. Amongst the macro keg I did find on locally brewed crafted option from Salt Brewery, albeit one of their regulars too. No cask in here.“

68 /100 UNIT 7 HOOKSTONE CENTRE, HOOKSTONE CHASE
“In one of a few industrial units in a affluent suburb of the town on the way towards Knaresborough. This is a small taproom but packs in quite a few tables at its front by keeping its furniture small. Outside there's a purpose built covered terrace area for the good weather times. Cask and keg from the brewer are available, as are bottles from the fridge where a few guests exist as well.“

“Behind the Turkish Baths towards the bottom of Parliament Street, this is an extensive Wetherspoon in the town's Winter Gardens complex, previously part of the spa complex but now given its current new use. It's worth a look around even if you're not staying for food or drink, if you do the usual chain selections apply.“

“The building is from the grand style of railway architecture, big and roomy and right on the station, however no entry on to the platforms, so leave that slightly extra time to get your train, this rushed my visit somewhat. Echoey, comfortable and grand. A must for any Harrogate visit.“

“This is a small cafe bar within a smart run of shops on the parade, took a little finding for me. It's laid back and relaxed, Covid secure entry and seating but manages to make it feel less intrusive. It's a single roomed bar as far as I could see, chatty and friendly. The beer range appears to have improved since Euroscoopers visit with local beers to the fore. I really enjoyed this place.“

72 /100 THE GINNEL
“This is another quirky bar in Harrogate, on the first floor of a row of shops. Unsurprisingly there is a David Bowie theme going on in here and its all the better for it. Cafe, restaurant, bar, it tempts in everyone. During Covid times there is a table menu and ordering on line, which took some time but was successful. Stripped back decor, wooden tables set out in the manner of a school classroom. Friendly and well worth visiting.“

58 /100 6 ROYAL PARADE
“Old school proper pub at the top end of town, my furthest from the Railway Station. Worn in, wooden, long bar, floor boards this has everything a pub should have. The Covid regulations are followed religiously in here which removes something of the atmosphere and the beer range is currently quite limited, presumably anticipating another unnecessary lock-down. Mixed bag but strange times.“

“New brewery cum bar opposite the unused, seemingly unfinished Nightingale Hospital for Covid 19 patients. Open fronted on sunny afternoons, there is seating out the front and within. It's a Brewery tap although the equipment wasn't in operation on my visit, looked a bit dusty up there. Lacks some atmosphere but it is what it is and a new brewery for me so worth the extra walk.“

“Situated on a street corner just a short stroll from town and the Railway Station, this is a very quirky and strange bar cum cafe cum haberdashery. Trying to be something to everyone doesn't quite hit the right notes for a bar, however the staff are excellent, the beer range is fine without being exciting. Overall it's worth the effort to find it but I doubt you would linger for long.“

“Modern Cafe Bar, Murmuration Bars, through 2 floors and multiple rooms close to the town centre. Clean, tidy and efficient and in its way, quite quirky. There are electronic beer boards advertising which beers are currently on, tied in with Untappd, so you can sort your beers out before you arrive. Nice varied choice of beers, should be a winner in there for most. Well worth a visit.“

“Enjoyed our visit to this 2019 Good Beer Guide bar. It is upstairs which made it difficult for my disabled husband but we found it worth it when we got up there. It is like a cafe / bar style with mix of seating styles and all sorts around being for sale. There are cask and craft beers available and staff help you choose what you want. “Called at this JDW bar last month as we had been advised it was one worth a visit for the grand style. As strangers though we did not know disabled access was at the rear, and after the walk down the hill to get to the front entrance my disabled husband found he had to struggle down the magnificent staircase. Once inside the bar area we did manage to find a table and chose Bridgehouse Aired Ale and Settle Nine Standards Porter, both of which were fine.“

“Rather grand for a spoons, a cut above the usual ex bank/municipal building they occupy. Well, this is Harrogate. Anyway, once you've descended the grand staircase, everything else is reassuringly spoons, so you know what to expect. A minor quibble, beer which would be £2.15 in Gateshead was £2.39 here. Like I said, minor.“

Hales Bar (Bar)
1-3, CRESCENT RD
“Lovely old pub with what I believe are original gas mantles on the bar. Comfortably old fashioned wood and leather and leather décor Two rooms, with the larger bar being more popular than the Vaults Bar. Would have happily dug in here but for two reasons. 1) Selection was bog standard local and big firm bitters which I've had countless times. 2) Seems to be aimed at passing tourist trade, (which fair enough, included us.) Still, a bit disappointing.“

“Favourite place visited on the day in Harrogate. Saturday lunch time saw a busy crowd of drinkers and families. Big open room upstairs in a craft arcade. Stripped back décor, comfy old sofas, board games, books, and art for sale on the walls. Guy who served us was very attentive and helpful, offered samples without being asked. Didn't eat, but people around us were having pizzas which looked and smelled good. Good beer selection which had some more esoteric stuff.“
