“Overlooking the canal junction in the town centre, this is a micropub with a fair selection of microbrewed cask available. Bright and airy inside you can watch the canal activity from inside or out as there's plenty of seating on the towpath area just outside the main door, some with tables, some are just benches with adapted glass holders at their ends“

Sound Bar (Bar)

“As the name suggests this is a music venue and the decor and set-up inside is unmistakably so. They've moved premises from Swadford Street to a slightly more modern but bigger unit by the bus station, which also has outdoor space. They have a good selection of real ales available from micros.“

Mess Room (Bar)
BRIDGE STREET
“Immediately on the North side of the canal where the small road bridge crosses, this is a twin roomed music venue with very little natural light, but operates as a vibrant enough public house at other times. There's both cask and craft keg available but the former is across both rooms with different options over its two bars - one in each room so check both first before choosing.“

“Three story relaxed modern late night bar in what is an atmospheric row of town centre buildings with either a roadside or pedestrian side entrance. This place has changed hands recently and is now called Hustle, concentrating more on an eclectic mix of drinks for its clientele than beer, but two cask regulars from Goose Eye still adorn the bar in the centre of the ground floor. An imported lager from Spain I'd never heard of provided a new tick for me.“

“Close to where the busy main road crosses the canal, this beer shop focusses mainly on the major new players in crafted brews, both local and further afield, with an excellent selection. Sadly it is soon to close.“

“Visited on 19th November 2021. As the bar name suggests it has two doors and can be entered from both the High Street or Sheep Street. It's a basic wooden bar room with a jovial front man fronting the place on our pub crawl (four adults and a mad Cocker Spaniel). Two hand-pulls, both being Bradfield Farmers beers on the day, maybe four keg lines and an interesting selection of cans and bottles, never seen Barrel Aged Rooster beers before (bought three different ones). Bit crampy when busy, but we were mid-afternoon and it was comfortable. Upstairs are two lounges and the toilets are a further staircase upwards, so if busy downstairs get yourself into the soft furnishings in the lounges. It's another Skipton bar I would happily revisit and hopefully will.“

Mess Room (Bar)
BRIDGE STREET
“Visited on 19th November 2021, party of four and a mad Cocker Spaniel. I thought this a strange place, four hand-pulls and four keg lines (including a Rhubarb Cider). Dark interior with a Cocktail Bar feel, more room outside, but it was too cold for that on our pub crawl. Beer quality was fine, staff friendly enough, just seemed a bit quirky for a 'Real Ale' outlet. Skipton has a lot of decent pubs/inns and this is another addition to that list, would happily re-visit this place on our next venture into the town.“

Keelham Farm Shop (Grocery Store)
KEELHAM FARM SHOP, GARGRAVE ROAD
“Large and busy farm-shop-cum-artisan-supermarket just off a roundabout on the Skipton bypass. Loads of local Yorkshire produce, both packaged in the shop, and also fresh on the large butchers, deli and cheese counters. The large cafe/ restaurant is very popular (and the food people had looked delicious) but we didn't try it ourselves. The beer "cellar" is actually a discrete corner of the shop on the way to the restaurant (turn left as you go in and keep going until you reach it). It hosts an impressive selection of Yorkshire brews (they quote 25 plus different breweries, and I'd guess at least 100 different beers). They're more orientated towards the traditional English brews in 500ml bottles, but craft cans have started to colonize it too. If I'd not already stocked up on beer on this trip, there would have been 4 or 5 new breweries for me and scores of new beers - even the top Ratebeerians are going to come away from here with plenty of new ticks. Prices are reasonable. A really good farm shop if you don't mind it being big and busy. I'd definitely return if I was in the area.“

Mess Room (Bar)
BRIDGE STREET
“Review during lockdown release phase 2, indoors allowed, socila distancing. We waited with interest for this one to spring into life, the opening hours are a mystery to everyone. But when we did get in it was a great surprise, lots of beers to go at, a really lively atmosphere. The service was pretty decent for the crowd they had in, a good range of beers to try. Well worth the wait.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release phase 2, indoors allowed, socially distanced. This is a really different place and well worth visiting. A combination of vinyl record shop and bar. They were playing classic soul tunes on my visit, excellent stuff and 2 new beers for me. Long and narrow with tables scattered throughout to give the distancing. I liked this place a lot.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release phase 2, indoors allowed with social distancing. This is a really friendly, chatty, banter bar right in the centre of Skipton, in the Market area when the roads close. Long and narrow with an entrance door each end, hence the name. Some outdoor seating to catch the sun otherwise an eclectic mix of seating on 2 floors. The toilets are a treck, Wetherspoons style. A happy place to go and spend some time. 4 real ales available reasonably local.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release 2nd phase, indoors with social distancing. Small micro pub on a busy road, friendly, chatty with a busy host bantering with his regulars. All cask pub with 5 beers on our visit. A bit of an RAF theme going on. Dog friendly. Well worth a look.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release phase 2, indoors allowed social distancing. This is rather a smart restaurant cum bar just away from the canal basin. Several cask ales to try with the list above the bar and some good selections, dog friendly. The staff were a little officious with the Covid regs, slightly unnecessary imo and the service a little brusque maybe. Didn't eat but the food looked decent. A little pompous but a good place to go.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release phase 2, indoors with social distancing. Quite a bijoux single roomed micro pub, just off Coach Street, easy to see. Some seating out the front but most prefer to sit indoors. 5 Real Ales available, no keg but some bottles, cans. Really friendly with a bouncy mine host taking you through the beers, loads of chat and banter. Dog friendly. Well worth visiting.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release phase 2, indoors allowed with social distancing. The sun was shining and it was warm so we sat on benches close to the canal and what a lovely spot this is. Relaxing, chatty, watching the boats coming and going. There are 5 cask beers on offer and 4 kegs on our visit, all with interest, localish. The service was excellent showing a great knowledge in their beers. Absolutely cracking place to go and a must visit.“

“Reviewed during lockdown release phase 2, indoors, socially distanced. This was rather a grand building in a previous life, apparently the Town House for the Duke of Devonshire, he must be turning in his grave. It's now a building of 2 halves, the left hand side has retained as much of its character as possible, the right is fairly typical Spoons. Table service only and ordering from an app doesn't give any great love for the place but the service was prompt and friendly and the breakfast was cold in traditional Spoons style. No interesting beers on cask at all, also a current trend with the chain.“

“Visited with the wife, friends and two dogs on 31st May 2019. Nice place by a canal boat basin, outside seating as well as plenty of room inside. Cask and keg selection interesting, so didn't check out if they had bottles or cans. Skipton is a good beer drinking town and this should be included on any crawl if you want to find some different beers (I found three new rates).“

“Sixth and final destination on our Skipton pub crawl on Sunday 9th April 2017. Six handpulls, didn’t look at any bottles. Pleasant, clean and tidy micro pub (the third of the crawl). Dog liked it, sadly we got talking to a ’drunken old soldier’ would wanted to tell my wife and I his life story: all we wanted to do was drink the fine ales and chat with our four friends, but we are too kind and listened for over an hour (or so it seemed) before departing for the train.“

“Pub number five on our Skipton pub crawl on Sunday 9th Apr 2017. My party of six and a dog went upstairs out the way, downstairs it was foodie and busy. Smart, clean and tidy, decent cask selection, didn’t look at the keg or bottle offerings. Staff OK, just poured the beers and took the money really: no interchange or courtesies. Not heard of ’market town taverns’ before: happy to find more.“

“Fourth port of call during a sunny Sunday afternoon pub crawl around Skipton (9th Apr 2017). Easy to find when with a local guide, not sure if so easy without one. Neat and tidy micro pub with five handpulls and a number of bottles. Liked it, these ’micro pubs’ are certainly changing the face of ’Real Ale’ drinking where ever they pop up. Beers in good nick, friendly staff and customers.“

“Third establishment visited on Sunday 9th April 2017 during a sunny afternoon Pub Crawl around Skipton. Well appointed and well kept place, foodie on a Sunday lunchtime of course; so after checking Bertie (the Collie) was welcome we walked through and found the courtyard out back as requested by the management and enjoyed our beers with the smokers and sun worshippers. Timothy Taylors beers only, but 5 to choose from on hand-pulls: didn’t see past those, so might have been some keg and bottled stuff too. Beers in great condition and very pleasant place all round.“

“Second stop on a Sunday Pub Crawl around Skipton. Sat outside in the rear as it was so sunny and we had the dog with us (bit foodie inside). Nice looking place, the beer garden is fine too. Four cask ales and the usual keg offerings, didn’t check the bottle selection, or try any food. Adnams, Theakstons and Exmoor beers on hand-pull, fourth one escapes me, but it must have been mainstream as I didn’t have it. Busy but friendly staff, worth popping in and I got an Exmoor rate (Hound Dog).“

“First pub on a Sunday crawl around Skipton (9th Apr 2017). Six of us and Bertie our Collie, he liked the water and the music. Oblong, single roomed ’micro pub’ with two cask ales, a few bottles and plenty of CD’s/Records to buy. Liked it, had both beers: one was named ’Sound Bar’ from the Wharfedale Brewery. Walls adorned with vinyl. Good start to a lovely sunny afternoons drinking. Score looks low because of the small beer selection: please visit if you get the chance.“

“Visited on 26th November 2016. Last stop on a rapid beer and micro pub tour of Skipton, talk about saving the best til last. Decent sized record shop with a bar at the rear, had 2 hand pulls with local cask beer and a small bottle selection. The decor is in keeping with the music vibe, had good tunes playing and a lovely relaxed vibe. It’s great to have a pint and look through a great selection of vinyl. Two of my favourite things! I’m sure it won’t be to everyone’s taste but bought a huge smile to my face and by far my favourite pub of the day. Pity I can’t turn the ambiance up to 11 it was that good!“

“Visited on 26th November 2016. Canal side cafe just around the corner from the Narrow Boat and Early Doors. It’s right down by the canal basin, is a large single room with real fires, plenty of comfy seating and neat decor in line with the canal theme. 5 local beers on cask, a decent range as I had low expectations from the place. Well kept and decently priced. Really liked this venue and one of the nicest in town.“

“Visited on 26th November 2016. Large pub with 2 rooms and an upstairs area. Nice traditional look to the place with plenty of wood panelling, a focus on good beer and food. Beer range was a good mix of local cask beer and some more exotic keg beers from the UK and a bit further afield. Prices were decent, service good and quality good. I really liked this place, probably the best venue for beer choice in town.“

“Visited on 26th November 2016. Micro pub down a small alleyway in the centre of town and close to the Narrowboat. Nice layout and managed to get a table, it was comfortable with a small group of us. Decent range of local cask beer, well kept and prices decent. Had a few bottles but didn’t really pay them much attention. A good example of a micropub and one I would return to.“

“This is a micropub in a shop unit just a couple of doors before the Weatherspoon, and seemingly unfazed by it, with six rotating hand pumps on the small bar in the centre of the small single room on its left hand wall. There’s a number of seats in a simple but inviting plain painted walls setting. There is a small courtyard alleyway area at its rear that can be used for outdoor drinking.“

“This pub has a fantastic location overlooking the canal, although its garden area is to the side of the building so there’s a road that stops you from direclty overlooking the man-made waterway, but it’s a relaxed area of the town so you could conceivably stand or sit with your pint at the elevated canal wall and enjoy the atmosphere if the weather allows. Inside it’s a traditional affair with carpets and wooden furniture, with the main bar and seating area to the left of the central doorway. The bar is set back at the rear of the pub and includes four real ale pumps, at least two of which will rotate - with guests from Devon and Suffolk on my visit.“

“Down the last side street before the canal, its entrance is opposite the small rear window of the Beer Engine bar on the previous street before the waterway. This pub has the greatest selection of rotating cask ales in the town and a couple of keg ones too. It’s a two room affair, but open plan with the central doorway first leading to the bar area on the left hand side. There’s seating in front of the ‘L’ shaped bar and slightly more in the other room to the right of the entrance. Eight hand pumps account for half of the taps here and the great cask selection they’ve had here can be seen by all the used beer clips on various walls and pillars around the bar area. It’s very wooden in its decor, fixtures and furniture and is a fairly relaxed and traditional styled pub that’s clearly in the market for the beer hunter in the region.“

“Sandwiched on the small alley between The Narrowboat and The Yorkshire Rose, this is certainly Skipton’s smallest pub. It serves only cask on five pumps with any lager orders only serviced by a decent enough bottle selection that includes beers from Germany and other prominent producers of this from Europe. The five cask pumps are at the rear of the very small room, which is where the locals seem to congregate, making it hard to find any service space in this already very cramped area. The front of the pub can only fit a couple of tables on both its left and right hand sides but a few stools are placed against a ledge against the front window to add a little more seating here. There’ just enough room for a floor to ceiling bookshelf too that has plenty of beer books to indulge you whilst you sip the fully rotating selection that exists here. The next 10 or so beers to go on the pumps have their beer clips above the toilet door, which isn’t marked, but given it is the only door that you won’t bash your head on trying to get through it is pretty obvious this is what it is. The bottled German and Belgian beers come with their designated glasses. As space is limited here the future kegs are stored under the pews that exist against the walls at the front part of the establishment. There’s also an off the wall hanging round clock here that wouldn’t look out of place in a train station if it was a little bigger.“

58 /100 10 COACH STREET
“A fairly standard chain pub in appearance, although it has very well kept wooden fixtures, fittings and furniture so it’s a very comfortable place to have a drink. It’s a one room affair with the bar set back against the rear wall, although that’s not too far into the pub as it is more elongated than having any depth to it. There’s a more intimate area to the right as you walk in which is away from the service area which sports five hand pumps that include a couple of ales that regularly rotate, and you can see what’s coming up as the next 10 or so are on the wall on the bar’s right-hand side. If you’re here in the summer you’ll be able to take advantage of the fine patio area which is bigger than the pub itself to its left-hand side and is a fine place to enjoy a drink in the elements.“

“On the main commercial road through town that crosses the canal, it’s just a very short walk after the bridge before it meets the slightly irregular four-way road junction, and very hard to miss given its prominent sign. This is a chain pub in the traditional sense, but very well designed with two open plan sides separated by incomplete walls through its centre - given this there’s a lot more depth to the pub than width. These include some lovely stonework that exists not just here but throughout the pub, complimented by some old-world decor that give the pub as fine an ambiance it can get for a chain. On your right as you walk in is a lovely open fireplace so if you can claim the table in front of it in the winter then do it straight away! The bar is set back in the middle of the pub against the right hand wall and includes five ale pumps that are practically the first thing you’ll see at the bar. A couple of these rotate and there was a Christmas special available on my visit. Food is served and it’s has enough ambiance to be enjoyable place to spend some time.“

“Arguably the best managed pub in town, for which it has won awards for, this is a Timothy Taylors run pub, but apart from its ale selection you would not know it as there are no signs purporting to the brewer on the outside or inside. It very much goes for your traditional pub look and achieves this with great success. The entrance is through an inner courtyard off the main commercial drag and has two drinking areas, front and back. The front always fills up first given it has lovely soft-backed chairs and a roaring fire in what is a beautifully decorated area that uses the building age, brick, and stonework to full effect, and of course the roaring open fire is very appealing. The bar serves this area although the lion share of pumps and ales are in the rear room where most of the serving goes on. Here, there are a few more tables that are comfortable but less attractive given how nice the front room is. Beyond this is the restaurant area.“

52 /100 CRAVEN STREET
“One of the first pubs you’ll come depending on which way you head from the station to the town. This self-standing white-washed building is directly opposite the large Tesco store, and has plenty of grounds for parking and also outdoor areas to drink around the pub. Inside it’s a little more bland than the building suggests it might be with an open plan ground floor area with the bar at the back of the building which is where the locals congregate, however the area facing out on the front of the building (to the right of the door after you enter) is very comfortable and worth a look. It’s certainly your best place to find Thwaites ales if you find yourself in Skipton, but unless you have a niche for this brewer and are looking for a few ticks from it, it’s probably worth bypassing and heading into town as there’s plenty of better places there, however as a last stop back before getting a train out of Dodge it suffices, despite not being the closest pub to the actual station. There is another pub directly opposite this called ‘The Railway’, but it has a bland cask selection on two pumps.“

“This Wetherspoon is an a grand self-standing building of post-Georgian times with an addition to the side. This is where the bar exists and given it’s not just one original building this pub has a very large ground floor space with lots of different areas to sit and enjoy a quiet drink. It’s all open plan but there’s lots of walls to give each area its own ambiance. If you head back into the older original part of the building after getting your drink there is a lovely open fire with a table right in front of if that certainly does warm you up if it’s inclement weather outside. On the many walls theres’s various pictures of Skipton in its past, all are in black and white. There are places to sit outside if the weather is good and the usual drinks selection and menus for the chain apply here with several ales rotating on the ten that exist at the inverted ‘L’ shaped bar.“

Bay Horse (Bar)
KEIGHLEY ROAD, SKIPTON ROAD
“By the Leeds-Liverpool canal at the southern tip of town, this large pub in its own building has a beautiful interior and there’s clearly been money spent on the fixtures and fittings and the result is a very cosy pub and restaurant. It’s part of a chain and given its location where town meets country it is more likely to be frequented by those seeking food rather than locals, however it does have three real ale pumps and is more than a viable option just to drink in. The selection rotates and includes seasonals. There’s a beer garden behind the pub and although the car park is large it probably gets full up fast during peak eating hours.“

“To the north of the town and very much in the countryside just before the municipal area ends and the Dales begin. This pub survives through its turnover of meals and carvery, but it’s large farmhouse-cum-barn style building also has plenty of rooms to let too. It’s not an old building for the area but maintains the rugged style that befits Yorkshire and fits in well. There’s a couple of rooms inside and a couple of ales to choose from at the bar which is quite simple in design. There’s extensive grounds around the building although it is mostly car parking area that is far too big for the number of vehicles that arrive. The patio area is large and in front of some of the accommodation rooms.“

“Certainly not a traditional pub, but the range of beers is second to none. 8 draught real ales alone with a couple of draught lagers as well - decent ones not the American gassy fake pilsners - and a bottled beer menu to die for with many Belgian, German, Dutch, Czech, etc beers to choose from.“
