“Visited 15/12/2023. It’s quite astonishing that this place has only 2 prior ratings dating back to 2016. It’s well worth a visit for its quirky, eclectic and lively setting. Visited after the H Natural (Steve Hogarth) gig at St John’s. Very busy, it being late on a Friday evening, with a very friendly vibe and engaging locals. Great service. Beer range is decent if unspectacular but it’s absolutely worth a visit.“

“Visited 15/12/2023. Spent about an hour and a half here prior to the H Natural (Steve Hogarth) gig at St John’s. I’ve been disappointed by recent offerings at other BrewDog’s I’ve visited but this one was top notch with some excellent guest beers available. Service was very good. Excellent visit.“

“A bit oldish looking house. Lots of brown wood and leather inside. Can/bottle fridge is right away in the middle. Otherwise typical Brewdog place. This one had a bit more guest taps than many other BDs where I visited during this trip. Brewdog taps are quite same all over UK. I would say that this is above average BD place.“

“Called in as it was close to Big Scary Monsters and en route to our hotel. Also one of the guys in BSM mentioned there was an excellent Crossover sour on so of course I had to try it. Also tried a new brewery from Bournemouth, passed on the Sureshot beers as had before. We did intend to have a burger after all the walking around the city, but was astonished at the pricing - £15 for a basic burger, with fries an additional fiver. £40 for two burgers?? We got the fries to share, which were basic, cheap. Shame. Other than that, it's typical Brewdog in feel though seems on the smaller side. Staff helpful. Left hungry, but happy to see a few interesting beers on.“

Brasileiro Oxford (Grocery Store)

“This is a store selling Brazilian products on the busy Cowley Road including Brazilian beers from a fridge to the rear. Nice and friendly service although there isn't a great deal of knowledge about the beers and they attempt to tempt you with Brazilian beer drinking snacks. It's worth a look if you need to boost your ratings from Brazil.“

Baltic Food (Grocery Store)
88 COWLEY ROAD
“Note: pre lockdown visit in December 2019. Small shop about 10 minutes' walk from town, stocking a crammed-in range of food and drink supposedly from all the Baltic States, although it seems most focussed on Lithuania. There's about 40 beers (including quite a few kvasses) - all the ones I looked at were Lithuanian. I don't have enough (well, any!) knowledge of Lithuanian brews to know if any of them were unusual, but they were all new to me. The lady serving didn't speak English, but was very friendly (despite being oddly determined to sell me a bag of unidentified orange berries from the freezer). An interesting little place, certainly worth a visit if you want to boost your Lithuanian rates or simply find some interesting food (including orange berries!).“

“Stopped in while visiting Oxford. One of the smalled BrewDog bars I have been in. Staff was friendly and just to the line of being to helpful if you know what I mean. They are currently taking reservations for two hour blocks due to pandemic reopening response. Food was good and wings are about as close to American you get. Found a few new rates, but most the line up was standard BrewDog shelvies.“

“Visited Feb '19. Visited on a bright, warm Winters day but the joy was sucked out on entering, this is quite a soulless building / place, empty and cold, it's like a cross between a working men's club and student union bar, the only action being the table tennis. Shockingly high prices for bog standard beer. Not one I will rush back to.“

“The BD "Oxford" bar is actually located quite far east of the centre in the St Clements area. Took me about 30mins walk from Oxford Central Station to get there. It is quite a handsome corner bar with a decent amount of covered outdoor seating out front. There were 15 taps on my visit spanning 10 BD and 5 guests (18th St, Dugges & Wild Weather. Fridge next to the bar had about 50 beers with quite a few guests. Friendly and helpful staff. Overall a rather nice BD bar with a chilled neighbourhood vibe.“

“Visited July 2018. Another corner bar, narrow but nicely utilised space in typical BrewDog style. Staff were friendly, enthusiastic, helpful. Selection wasn't particularly great at the time, half of it being their core beers of course alongside recent releases, most I'd already had though I did get to try my first beer from Overworks which was good. The other half of the lines were guest beers that seemed a little uninspired (for me) at the time, a Dugges showcase was upcoming though which may have been a better time to visit. We sat outside which although nice we did find the area incredibly noisy (a weekday evening, post rush-hour), lots of traffic and cars beeping. Since learned it's a student area which is probably great for business, and indeed there did seem to be a lot of student-aged folk inside. I must admit we weren't exactly taken by the area; completely unfamiliar with it, but things didn't get off to a good start when we saw a couple of junkies hanging around the pay meter in the nearby car park on Union St. They did make an effort in small talk before begging for my change, and thankfully did not persist when I said no.. lovely. Other than that it was fine, and in hindsight the location seems good with it being very close to the O2 arena and university digs, just the general look and feel of the surrounding area left a little to be desired. As others have mentioned your experience will probably greatly depend on a number of factors, not least time of day and if any events are on.“

“Corner bar on the Cowley Road in a students area. One of the smaller Brewdog bars but nicely fitted out in their usual style. Around 18 to 20 taps with roughly 60% / 40% mix of Brewdog / guest beers. St Patrick’s Day beer showcase was on during my visit, good to try some craft from across the water.“

“Jan '18 Rating - 80. Finally managed to get a seat inside as this place has always been packed on a Friday night. Relaxed and welcoming this time with an incredibly enthusiastic bar girl. Much better now.
Sep '17 Review - 66. Okay this is an early review as this was the official opening night, so the rating will change. We all wondered why Brewdog would choose the Cowley Road for their Oxford venue, but this is student digs territory and is a busy area, so they have done their research. Extremely packed so it was hard to take in, it appears they have taken out the fixtures of the old pub, but it isn't as industrial as many of the chain. The bar is on the right as you walk in and whilst the pub is fairly narrow it is very deep and can seat a lot of people, there is also a garden area. The beer range is smaller than many Brewdogs I have been in. Not sure this will be a regular venue for us as it is outside our normal area but we will pay further visits from time to time.“

“We've been here on three separate occasions now and I have to say as is the case with many places your enjoyment of the place will be heavily dependent on a number of factors to include the time of day, what day, if there are events on, staffing levels etc. So I have to say that now I have probably got a fairly balanced view, as I have been on a Thurs', Sat (day & night) during Collab' fest' and a Sun'. It occupies what used to be Harrys but prior to that was the Corridor and before that the New Inn. It is well located up the Cowley Rd right in the thick of the action with the Bullingdon and O2 gig venues both very close by.It is on a great bus route 24hrs and was probably the best location that Brewdog could have gone for, I told them about its availability a couple of years ago prior to Harrys taking it over, I reminded them recently and showed some head honcho in Brewdog the email chain from two years ago, pointing out why this and the Cowley rd was the perfect place and did this to see if I could retrospectively claim a finders fee but they sent me a very dissmisive email back Grrrr....

It is a corner location, its a nice pub exterior wise though some industrial decking and covered area has ruined this look somewhat. Inside it is long and narrow with space put to good use, plenty of seating bays, sharing long tables and high stools at the end of the bar. The bar is on the RH side as you enter. The beer choice is clearly not as wide ranging as some of the venues but it is still pretty good and on a par with similarly sized premises within the chain. Its got the familiar industrial look but its not quite as brutal or as stark as some.

Staff on the whole have been great, friendly, helpful and very enthusiastic however one failing was the Collab' Fest' which coincided with a multi venue music festival on the Cowley Rd that day, so they were really struggling with low staffing considering the amount of punters. It has had a nice mix of punters and having been to the Pint Shop and Grapes yesterday (Sunday) which were both really quiet Brewdog was doing a roaring trade for a Sunday evening.

I would like to see the arrival of Brewdog give a much needed kick up the bum to some other Cowley Rd venues i'm looking at you James St Tavern, The Cowley Retreat and you Big Society as they could all really up their game as they have had it too easy for far too long. So far so good, yes its expensive, yes its a bit full of itself but its what Oxford and this area of Oxford really needed.“

“Sep '17 rating - 44. Adding this one just for completion really, this is a popular, quite a large pub in the area known as The Plain, which is basically a roundabout close to Magdalen Bridge. It gets packed with students on a Friday evening, the beer range is pretty basic, but it is a handy watering hole on the way into town.“

“Sep '17 Rating - 50. Since the demise of Fisher & Co, this has become a full on GK pub so the beer interest is much diminishe. It is still lively but not a pub worth searching out now.
June '13 Rating - 78. This is is much improved pub since previous visits, now boasting 8 Hand Pumps with Fisher & Co as its main range, there is a link to the micro brewery plus several ever changing guests. The food looks great and there is certainly a fresh buzz about the place. I really hope it continues and is certainly currently worth a high mark.“

“This has the feel of entering a friends house, where a party is going on. It was choc a bloc on a Friday evening. You enter the front room, where there is a small bar to your right. The beers on offer are well signed giving a decent range of both hand pulls and keg, particularly for the size of the bar. There appears to be a decent selection of bottled beers too. To get some air we wended our way through to the patio garden, again heaving. This place seems well worth a visit and will be added to our favourites list for Oxford. Great place.“

City Arms (Bar)
288 COWLEY RD,
“Large pub on the Cowley Road at the outer end of the run of shops and restaurants, a bit of a slog from town. Very popular with students and youngsters, there are bouncers on the doors in the evening, I noticed a lot of id’s being checked thouroughly. The beer range seems to have collapsed since Fin’s visit, just a couple of kegs of interest and a couple of hand pulls in use. We were initially served an awful beer when we finally got the one serving girls attention. The electronic till system really slows down the process, but people don’t seem to be able to add up in their heads these days plus the stock system needs to be kept up to date. Not a place we will return to in a hurry.“

We visited Polski Sklep Żubr on Record Store Day Saturday 16th April 2016, it caught our eye as it is situated across the road from the Truck Record Store where we had stood patiently in a queue for an hour and more.

So yes this is on the Cowley Road near the Marston Street junction and I guess you would class it as being lower middle end of the busy section of the Cowley Road and as stated is across from Truck Records which is on the corner of Rectory Road/Cowley Road.

It’s a nice little place inside, well laid out and doesn’t just stock Polish food and drink, Bulgarian, Hungarian and other East European countries also see prominence given to their meats and other foodstuffs. The beer is on your left in a fridge on the way in and I guess that there are 20-30 beers available. The choice from what I could see was concentrating heavily on Polish beer with a number that I’d not seen before. I picked up a couple with the Amber Kozlak from Amber Browar being pretty decent. The counter was on the opposite side at the front of the shop, prices for this type of store a little on the higher side but still not too bad. Loz took more time to peruse the rest of the store and said it was very good picking up Rye bread and Kabanos type sausages. We’ll definitely revisit here but with a food focus first and a quick check on beers second.

We last visited The Library Friday 15th April 2016. The Library is probably our favourite pub in Oxford where we drink most. It is situated on the Cowley Road, right in the thick of it, just along from the O2 and about as central as you can get.

It doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary, a bay window at the front and door/entrance to the RH side via a few steps. Along with the steps it is quite a narrow entrance, I am thinking that wheelchair access is nigh on impossible. So you enter via a small corridor with book wallpaper this brings you to a small room with the bar immediately on the RH side and three perhaps four tables and seating stools and bench seating off to the LH side. A wooden floor and then the bay window which let’s quite a bit of light in and of course offers ample people watching opportunities on this road. Beyond this room is another small corridor, it’s a little labyrinth like here, the toilets are situated here, a small backroom is ahead and turn back on yourself after going down a few steps and a cellar bar can be accessed off of here and finally beyond the backroom is the garden.

In terms of beers the tap selection rarely wows me, but the bottle and can choice is usually pretty good and regularly changes. On tap there is always a Camden Ink, Camden Helles, Brooklyn Lager etc and on the one cask handpump the likes of Abingdon Bridge. XT, Vale, Siren or Shotover are among the breweries that tend to feature. Last Friday I had Siren Vanilla Berliner Weiss, Siren Pompimpocello, Camden IHL amongst those on offer in cans and bottles and there was also a beer festival in the backroom with about eight cask and four keg offerings.

If you arrive between 4-7 you’re are handed a box with a pair of dice, simply roll a pair of 1,3 or 5 and your round is free. The food is simple but very good street food style so the other week I had a burrito stuffed full of slow roasted pork, salad and other stuff and Loz had homemade burger and we shared some chips, for £14 total it was great, Steve the chef is a lovely fellow. You get a nice diverse crowd in here, music is good but not too obtrusive as to hinder conversation. It’s a great bar, we’ve been coming here for years both in this most recent and best incarnation and previously years ago when it was called The Brickworks and before that Rats? I think. Great bar, lovely atmosphere and good staff, I have only one criticism and that is the prices for beer (bottles and cans) can be a tad expensive.

We visited The Star on Saturday 30th January 2016. we used to live on the Cowley Road back in the mid to late nineties and this used to be a pub that we popped into from time to time, so it was quite strange coming back here having not been in here for probably 12-15 years.

The pub is located on Rectory Road which if you are travelling up Cowley Road i.e. away from town then it can be found on the LH side, look for Truck Records on the corner (note it’s one way so car drivers can’t turn left here) its 2 mins along Rectory Road on the RH side.

Its fairly plain white double fronted pub from the outside, yet inside it is a bit Tardis like. Lot of seating, the bar off to the RH side, a separate room with two pool tables out back en route to the gents and being late January I never checked the garden out but I believe that there is one, interestingly we never ventured out into the garden when we lived near here either.

This is a real proper East Oxford pub, there is a great cross section of folk in here, very diverse and buzzing, it was really busy. We managed to bag a seat and table near the door but were lucky, everyone after us was standing. People were playing cards, board games, lots of folk just chatting, students, a group of fifty something football fans on a pub crawl who like us were saying that they hadn’t been here for years, we both loved the atmosphere in here, it was friendly and vibrant. One chap in here stood at the bar reminded us both of the suave Mexican Ten Pin Bowler called Jesus in The Big Lebowski, his mannerisms, look, how he held his beer, stood at the bar all the same really made us smile did that, we liked him.

Beer choice was the two latest offerings from XT namely Manta Ray and XT 15 English IPA and Roosters Blind Jack. I never really took a great deal of notice of the keg offerings other than that to note the Staropramen on tap was popular. Despite the fact it was so busy in here the service was friendly and brisk, we didn’t wait long at all. I am frustrated with myself for not revisiting this place before now and would have to say that any pub crawl of the Cowley Road, St Clements, Iffley Road area should definitely include the Star it is probably as traditional as you are gonna’ get.“

Update January 2016 I don’t pop in here quite so regularly these days as there are so many good online options however if you are in the area it is still worth having a cheeky little check in.

The German selection is still ok and prices are reasonable, the US selection has increased a little but many of these are not so very difficult to obtain, still the Flying Dog Imperial IPA Centennial was a good find if a little on the pricey side at £4+ or thereabouts. There is a pretty good Thorbridge and Brewdog selection, even an Abstrakt 16 to be found! yours for £14+. I guess if you are after your unusual country rates then the Dodgi’ Deli may still throw up the odd surprise, I saw a beer from Mauritius. I also picked up Dragon Stout for 89p a bottle (B&M prices) which I guess is sort of the conundrum with this place, i.e. the marketplace has just got that bit more crowded and B&M will now offer the cheap and cheerful stuff equally as cheap and online will offer you the better stuff, with a greater variety and better prices. Still if I wanted to just go for new stuff, there was plenty of it, however it was mostly average quality at best and I guess over the years you become and more and more discerning drinker. However it is still a favourite for the partying student type keen to buy case after case of cheap close to sell by date beer or more sadly for those individuals with serious drink issues.

September 25 2009 I’ve been using this place for the best part of 14-15 years now and it never ceases to surprise me. All of the German beers are £1.89 a bottle regardless of strength and everytime I go in there I pick up a new German beer, but with Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock, Augistiner Maximator and Schenider Aventinus all to be found here quite regularly its heaven if you just want to re-visit some old favourites. They have a decent selection of other world beers and this is the place to go if you want to unearth that Belarus, Ukraine, or Peruvian beer that you want to add to your list of countries beers to tick off. The UK selection is fine enough and lately has featured a wide selection from the following breweries amongst others Glastonbury, Wissey Valley, Naylors, but there are gems like Thornbridge Halcyon to be found. If I have one criticism is that in comparison to the German beers many of the UK beers seem a little steep and they unlike the German beers appear to be priced with an eye on strenght, even so by most standards thay’re quite reasonable. I suppose the real bread and butter for this shop is the out of date beers which the students and others buy by the case. Its well worth popping in the owner whose name I’ve momentarily forgotten but have known for many years as I used to live just three-four doors away is a lovely chap his sister runs the nearby newsagent Amit and Ajay. For a decent selection of beers at superb prices by Oxford standards the Dodgi Deli as it is affectionately known simply because it sells quite a lot of out of date or close to sell by date beer btw (it used to do food years ago, but no longer does) anyway its well worth stopping by and stocking up. To the best of my knowledge only ever frequented by myself and Doppleganger (Casey) from this site, would love some others to find this place. Oh and one last thing it now has a listing in the Good Bottled Beer Guide the owner told me last week.“

74 /100 19 CHESTER STREET

We visited here on Thursday 26th November 2015, meeting up with Ferret to have a couple of beers before going to see the band Stornoway at St John the Evangalist Church a little further down the road, closer to town.

This place is just off of the Iffley Road on Chester Street, which is one of the first residential streets that you come to on the RH side after the Iffley Rd running track and Rugby pitches, its also close enough to the Cowley road and St Clements to make a crawl.

It had been a long time since I had last been in here, probably over 13 years ago when we were living in Oxford. In that time this place has closed, been tarted up and now re-opened. I guess you can say that this looks, and to an extent still is a traditional back street boozer, though it is clear in this day and age, there is a big emphasis on food, I guess that places like this need to do this as wet sales alone will not sustain a back street pub any longer.

Inside it has been opened up a lot, simply furnished with tables and chairs off to your RH side and fixed bench type larger tables and chairs off on the LH side running alongside the outside wall. There is a good sized garden but if driving be aware parking on these old narrow residential streets is difficult, it is also worth noting that there are parking restrictions and permit parking applies in many of the streets around this area.

It was quiet when we arrived about 6:45pm but by the time we left about 8:45pm it was really quite busy, however at the quite times it did feel a bit too sparse, open and a little bit soulless despite the best efforts of the keen and eager staff.

Beer choice was pretty good and the barman pointed out to us that there is an emphasis on trying to source beers from local’ish’ producers so Loose Cannon and Purity feature and I understand that Siren (Undercurrent on tap) is likely to be a permanent feature. I liked it here I think that it still needs to find its feet particularly on the beery front, but it is heading in the right direction.“

City Arms (Bar)
288 COWLEY RD,

I visited the City Arms on Friday 20th November 2015. The City Arms is at the far end (away from town) of the busy Cowley Road, it is located at the Magdalen Road junction and situated just before it turns all residential and the road name eventually changes. The pub is a solid old corner pub opposite what used to be a cinema (Regal I believe) For those who can remember the Firkin chain, back in the 80s to early 90s this was one of them. There were three Firkin pubs in Oxford at one-time and as this one was just a couple of hundred yards from our flat on the Cowley Road we used to frequent this one quite a lot back in the 90s.

It has been a very long while since I had been here, quite a few years so it was interesting to step inside and see what it was like now. I note from its website it is part of the Stonegate Pub Co’, I don’t think I an familiar with them so unsure if they have any other places in or around Oxford. With chalkboard outside bigging up its Craft Beer credentials it is clear that having been recently refurbished this pub was keen to jump on the Craft Beer bandwagon. If you enter via the door on the Cowley Road corner of the pub the bar is ahead running parallel to the Magdalen Rd side of the pub, there is seating off to the RH side here before you reach the bar and the toilets are over this side, a further room at the back so sort of behind the bar has further seating though I never really explored this. Tiled floors, a cleaner less cluttered look, and on the food front, what looked like home-made burgers and skinny fries served in little metal buckets confirmed that this had been looking elsewhere for inspiration and fair play to them, last time I came here this place had looked sad and dejected and had clearly looked like it’s best years were behind it, but hey-ho at least now it was trying to pick itself up and join the cool kids.

The beer selection had 5 Kegs with Brewdog Libertine, Brewdog Candy Kaiser, Tiny Rebel Urban IPA, Great Yorkshire Fright Bite and one other so quite an interesting choice the cask selection was a little less inspiring North Cotswold Best and some others that really weren’t that interesting or clearly didn’t register with me, but there were four cask handpumps to choose from. Prices for both keg and cask seemed fair enough.

Service was far from great. One of the bar staff was busy trying to sort out a couple of the keg lines another was having issues with the card machine which didn’t appear to want to take payments and the third one seemed to be concentrating on serving the food, so this side of the bar was getting busier and busier and no one was getting served a beer. I have to confess having waited some time with no prospect of being served in sights I used the facilities and left, I will try to return next week when I go to a gig on the Iffley Road. One great thing about this place it looked like a similar crowd who would have used it before were still using it now that it had clearly tarted itself up and applied some lippy. So no perfectly manicured bearded or wax moustached hipsters to be seen anywhere here.“

“My first visit here for a number of years and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. There were three beers from Fisher & Co, two from XT a Greene King beer and one from Plain so seven on today. I had the XT 13 which was in very good condition and a very nice drop. This place is literally just off Cowley Rd and on a side road between Cowley and Iffley Rds. There is a small patio area out front and you enter into the main bar area with seating to your left and right, the actual serving bar is ahead straight in front. The pub is very much open plan, but even at a relatively early hour it has a nice vibe and atmosphere, sort of lived in without being scruffy. Looks like it attracts a mixed crowd with seasoned regulars and young female students etc. Liked it here, maybe the Cowley Road is finally picking up again after a number of years in the doldrums.“

“I tend to visit here quite often, mainly because it is a good stop off between town and where the camper is parked on our many forays into Oxford. We used to live on neighbouring Cowley Rd and this has always tended to be one of our favourite places to meet up. The pub is situated amongst a cluster of restaurants in the key part of St Clements, it is about a 15-20 min walk from the city centre and just 2-3 mins from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Cowley Road. Buses stop all along this road so you can access it easily from Marston, Headington, the city centre and Cowley, you used to be able to park behind in the pay and display car park which has now been sold off by a cash needy council for yet more student flats to be built on it, though there may be a limited number of spaces once the buildings works are completed. The pub itself has a narrow partly shaded patio area at the rear and inside is essentially a one large room pub, with one slightly elevated level. I believe that they still have bar billiards table and this pub is always popular and well frequented. Interestingly the toilets are both upstairs and I am unsure where a disabled access toilet is, I wonder if they allowed to point people in the direction of the council toilets situated at the rear of this pub in the aforementioned former car park as these are so close or whether they have one and I have just never noticed it. The beers have always been really well kept and with a decent range albeit from the Youngs rosta. Wooden floors and with some nice comfy chairs its a really nicepub, out front there is another small patio area. One of my favourites in the Cowley Rd & St Clements area.“

“A handy place to pick up the latest Compass beers really and a useful pub for a St. Clemence crawl, this is a larger pub than the frontage would suggest with a huge garden / patio area which is unusual in Oxford. The service was abysmal and extremely rude I have to say, but once you have your beer then the pub improves. Seating in the front and Pool Tables to the rear, you have to wait until a player takes his shot to get to the loo. It’s ok.“

“We visited here Saturday 16th March 2013. I have been interested in what this place formerly The Elm Tree would be like. My first thoughts were well at least t isn’t another eaterie (though it does food) on the Cowley Rd and I guess i generally felt quite positive towards the place. There are two handpumps with constantly rotating guest beers there were two from XT on when we were there and prior to that it had been Shotover beers. On the fonts it was mainly Meantime as I recall, I had a Meantime Pale. The pub is well situated on the Cowley Road towards the town end and a short walk from the Angel & Greyhound on St Clements. There appears to be this pop up shop thing happening on a regular basis here with part of the pub (a seperate bar area to the left) given over to a local enterprise, when we were there, there were a number of arty, farty types with things made of wire. Anyway I quite liked this, it is near Truck records so I will review again soon I guess and they seemed happy to listen to my beery recommendations.“

“We visited here last night Monday 14th May 2012 to watch a gig The Lovely Eggs (excellent by the way). I’ve been here a few times over the years, usually for Morris related events and have always found it friendly, welcoming and with a nice buzz about the place. I suppose more importantly despite a limited choice of beer they have always been well kept and the Belhaven Golden Bay and Timothy Taylors Golden Best were no exception last night. I know that they had 2 handpumps in the front bar but I have a feeling that there might be an option for a third handpump in the lower bar (not sure though) Still in the Cowley Road and St Clements area it is worth popping in if nearby and if you can combine this with a gig I am sure that a good night will be guaranteed.“
