“Visited for the first time at the very wet 2023 version of this festival. Have previously been to the festival when it was at Ponds Forge.“

“Micropub just before the city centre turns into the Kelham Island area in a decent sized shop unit. This is an outlet for Lost Industry, but guest brews exist in this airy and roomy venue, which is still being transformed from its former self at the time of writing by the very pleasant proprietoress.“

“Modern road facing bar in amongst the older buildings in the Kelham Island district. Serving food in an L shaped room with the bar immediately on your right as you enter, its Salt brews in cask and keg were all regulars when I visited, although a couple of guest brews offer up something a bit difference.“

“Very traditional brick pub located at the end of a terrace house street just outside the main ring-road around the city centre on its northern side, so is an easy enough walk. A multi-roomed pub with a bar in the hallway reception area in the middle of the building, its seating areas have a heritage appeal in design, appearance and upholstery. There's also a wood burner in an old fireplace to enjoy in the less warmer months. Neepsend brews are aplenty in cask here, some keg choices are available too.“

“Red brick single-storey building directly behind The Wellington public house - which is the tap house for Neepsend Brewery, and this effectively is the bottle shop for it, although cans are pretty prominent here at the moment.“

“Facing the main ring road at pretty much its most northern point aroun the city centre, this is an impressive cidery, bar and shop built out of three levels of shipping containers, which blend in well with the new build apartments behind it. Alas, people are now being directed to their new bar The Old Shoe as this venue is closing.“

“New incarnation on the site of the old Barstewards, now under the stewardship of Helen off of Lost Industry and de facto taproom for them. 5 handpumps and about 9 keg lines, range of LI and guests“

“Happened across this one between the Wellington and the Fat Cat so popped in. Agree with Cheeseboard, it does feel a little soulless but there was a bunch of youngsters in there doing their best. Mainly keg beers but with a few handpulls. It's worth a look in if passing by.“

“Traditional old corner pub, close to a tram stop, painted a dusky pink it looks a little gaudy from the outside but it is calm and relaxing in. A row of hand pumps mostly with their own Neepsend beers on including their latest offerings. Quite quiet on a Sunday lunchtime, the baps are good value, as is the price of the beers. Well worth seeking out.“

“This is the only dedicated cider place in Sheffield, although they do have a small selection of craft beer, some wine including natural wines, Ice cider, and even one gin. Three house ciders are in the fermenter and should be ready soon. Meanwhile a flight of three bottle samples is possible, as well as a large selection of bottles and cans in both small and large format. The ciders and perries that Mike has chosen are all top notch, and very different from one another, so this is a great place to explore the cider possibilities and the differences between apple varieties and between regions. Mike is a great house and knows his stuff. The place itself is long and narrow with wooden benches running down the sides, as well as two lawn chairs. They could use some tray tables, like what we used to eat TV dinners on as a kid. Anyway don't get too used to this, expansion plans are in the works.“

“Ran into several current and former Ratebeerians here, many of who have converted to Untappd, for a special session of imperial stouts from around the world. Found some bottles of pretty amazing sours from Wildflower in Australia to use as palate cleansers in between. The pub itself consists of at least four different rooms, each one more characterful that the last, one with a hypnotizing tall case clock. We chose the front room, though, because it gave full visibility to the beer list. The bottle list is probably large but is being re-worked; the barman working on it gave me a draft copy and helped me choose some interesting bottles. Servers knew the beers well, and went above and beyond during a fairly busy event. Food is cold pies. Solid place.“

“Old skool pub, lots of wood. Both the decor and the clientele are mainly antiques. Two rooms, second looked like it was once used for dining, but the only food is cold pies despite what the website says. Nice selection of South Yorkshire beers from various breweries. Worth a look if in the area.“

“Surprised to find I haven’t raised this place yet, as I’ve been several time. This rate is based on my visit in March 2022. It has the feel of an old school pub with a few smallish rooms. And a winding walk to the large court yard beer garden. This tends to be my first stop on a trip due to the range and quality of the beer on both keg and cask. Almost countless taps. Amazing place“

“Visited on a sunny Thursday afternoon in March 2022. Sat outside in the sunny beer garden. The bar itself felt small and cramped but the sun was out so it didn’t matter. Several guest beers on tap from local breweries.“

“Visited on a pub crawl around Sheffield in March 2022. Nice old pub feel, in an area that appears to be undergoing lots of development. Fairly busy (and it was a Thursday lunch time). Plenty of south Yorks and Derbyshire beers on cask and tap. Beer in decent condition. well worth a visit.“

“Modern bar in the Kelham Island area. Salt seem to be taking over the world at the mo. Most of the beers are keg if I recall and from the Salt/Ossett/Rat stable. Quite a young vibe inside but I found it a bit soulless.“

“Visited this historic pub back on a sunny Bank Holiday in 2016, in what was an industrial area seemingly being cleared for the expansion of the regeneration of the Kelham Island area already underway. It's great this traditional pub survives though, with a fine local cask selection and cosy decor. Long may it last.“

90 /100 KELHAM ISLAND MUSEUM, ALMA STREET
“This is a wonderful mid-sized Beer Festival within the Kelham Island Museum Buildings situated behind the Fat Cat pub. The museum gives a marvellous atmosphere and provides much additional interest during the visit. It is split into 3 areas with a marquee set up in the courtyard, a draught bar on the ground floor and a cask bar in the upper hall where there is also music of all types. Lots of beers to go at with lots of rare offerings. Well attended with a good and happy atmosphere and great staff. One we will definitely be revisiting.“

“On the way to Kelham Island, this is an old-school ale house with a central bar, multi-roomed, with a run-down appearance which helps give the place most of its charm. The beer selection here is excellent, with plenty of rotating cask choices, and it's kept well. I came here on a pub crawl so my stay lasted as long as my beer, but would certainly have spent more time here if I could have.“

“First stop on a tour of Sheffield a couple of years back, it's a low-lit traditional pub on the inside, welcoming, still with Exit 33 beers adorning the bar when I was here, with something new for me. On the opposite side of the river to the Immigration Services building in the city centre.“

“Larger than the other Kelham Island pubs, more hipster and with a nicer view. Recommended on sunny days as the beer garden is pleasant next to the river. Has a solid local and regional tap range. From memory it is a bit more expensive than the other pubs in the area.“

“Smaller pub with an older clientell but a tap range to match the hipster joints. Stocks Neepsend which is a big win, but also some Bradfield and other guest ales. Better than some of the more well known pubs down the hill“

“Large corner pub overlooking the river with elements of traditional and modern in its design. Visited on a warm Bank Holiday so sat outside in the attractive garden area which is a sun trap. Has half a dozen cask ales, but if I remember correctly only one was a new beer for myself.“

“I would put this place a small notch behind Kelham Island Tavern but make no mistake these pubs are, for mine. some of the world's great old school pubs. Super traditional and just as real as it comes; reminds me of the old Fitzroy pubs (Melbourne) from 10 - 15 years ago. Pricing in line with the Kelham although the taps, on my visit, was a bit more bitter/stout/porter orientated. Super hipster free and indeed Goy would have really stood out as a Thai tourist! Frankly 1000% percent more interesting than so many soulless craft beer bars around the world. Burgers and pies drive the menu at modest pricing. Far out...these pubs are so low BS it's positively therapeutic!“

“Absolute salt-of-the-earth this place. Very hipster-free with a local older crowd. Mostly local gear on tap (ie very local) but that's not to say the list is loaded with bitters; quite the opposite in fact. Coming out of Thailand and Australia the beer is, for mine, incredible cheap with many half pints under 2 pounds. How good would this be as a local? About 15 taps with at least half cask. Food seems limited.“

“Another bar not to be missed when out looking for good real ales. Very busy yesterday and the bar area was packed, as was the rear room where some players were performing. We chose beers from Hopjacker an North Riding breweries from the excellent selection and took them out into the garden. Enjoyed both beers especially the brilliant Mocha Porter from North Riding along with a couple of filled rolls from the bar.“

“A must when on a real ale crawl in Sheffield. A pleasant friendly bar that is usually very busy, and a separate room across the corridor, plus a garden seating area at the back. Plenty of beers to choose from includin 3 from the nearby Kelham Island brewery. We chose beers from Ascot and Chin Chin breweries, both in excellent condition. Reasonably priced meals and popular pork pies available.“

“Our last pub of the evening was well worth the walk. 8 HP and at least 5 kegs. Mostly pale ales and IPA. Very good bottle selection as well, 2 new Kernels for me. Mini maze interior, lots of different lay out rooms, a place with a good vibe , traditional interior with modern beers. Thanks to Dave for takling us here. (Visited with D and Holmen 2. 4.1.18)“

“Visited January 2017. Multi-roomed pub, with a wide mix of customers, friendly staff and beers offered at good prices. The selection was excellent, both on cask and keg, with a mixture of styles with, on this occasion, an emphasis on the strong. Beer condition was excellent. Probably my favourite pub in Sheffield.“

“Visited April 2017, post-Brexit Yorkshire tour. Fun traditional parlour boozer to start off a Sheffield pub crawl and enjoy a few traditional cask ales in cushioned seats (nice standard bottle selection of Belgians to keep the brother-in-law happy when EU-nifyingly sharing rounds). Kelham Island ales were fresh and crisp. I like the central tap dispensing booth, gives it both a train station and church-like feel...“

“Good mix of cask and keg with an always interesting selection. On this visit there was a weird beard tto on. The place was heaving with a great atmosphere and great beers. It’s traditional looking with mismatched furniture. I used to come in here on the way down to the fat cat and Kelham island tavern mainly just for a game of pool. Was always dead so no surprise it closed down for a bit a few years back. It’s certainly massively improved since it reopened and in fact it’s the best pub in Sheffield now for me.“
