70 /100 Black Bear (Pubs Ltd) (Bar) HIGH STREET Recently (sympathetically) refurbished timber-framed food-led pub at the top of the high street, across the road from a very impressive church. From a beer point of view, they offer 4 cask ales, usually locally sourced, and in good condition. There is a small bar area if it's just a drink you're after, but the focus here is on dining (like sister pubs The Swan at Marbury and The Hare at Farndon) |
66 /100 ST MARY'S STREET Visited on Saturday 2nd Sep 2017 while on a train crawl with the wife. Typical Joules Brewery refurbishment, plenty of wood paneling and tiles. Has guest cask and keg beers alongside the regular and seasonal Joules offerings. Nice place and the smallest Joules pub I've been in so far. The outside Gents is in a Grade 11 listed building. Courtyard and smoking area add some extra space out back near the toilets. Nice place. We hit 5 pubs in Whitchurch and 3 are now on the database of RateBeer. Nothing wrong with the other 2 places, but the 3 that are listed are all recommend by me and Whitchurch is a lovely little town for a pub crawl. |
68 /100 White Bear (Bar) 10 HIGH STREET Hidden away behind a small entrance and courtyard, just off the High Street. Once inside it opens up to reveal a multi-roomed pub with a further large outside drinking area to the rear. Four cask ales plus the usual keg selection. Nice friendly place with a large and loyal local following. Beer was fine on our visit (2nd Sep 2017). |
78 /100 Black Bear (Pubs Ltd) (Bar) HIGH STREET Lovely looking pub at the top of the High Street. Best selection of cask ales in town, usually six to chose from. Also the most expensive in town. Food plays a big part in here too, good, but again not cheap. Pleasant, young staff who smile a lot. Tastefully decorated in an old world sort of country way, small patio area and garden out the back. |
76 /100 Black Bear (Pubs Ltd) (Bar) HIGH STREET Black and white timbered building in the town centre. Nicely laid out in 2 sections, bit foody. Beer was in A1 condition. 4 beers on tap but they normally have 6 on. |
