COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The 1349 Ales are the results of a collaboration between three highly potent forces - Norwegian metal masters 1349, American feinschmecker brewery Surly, and Norwegian rising brewery star Lervig. With these ales we wanted to explore the powers of combined forces from different worlds of craftmanship and to manifest what our ideas of proper beers are. We have all brought our minds, heart and soul to this project. Revel in the Dionysian pleasures! As the bubonic plague silenced 2/3rds of Norway’s population back in the day, this dark beverage will scatter ashes along its way - leaving you breathless, but wanting for more. The 1349 Black Ale is our Strange Old Brew; an absolutely massive beer loaded with all the power malts, hops and freshly ground Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee, and rounded off with a distinguishable note of apocalyptic delicacy. This calls for a toast; now have a sip from our massive cauldron of chaos.

Beer5000 (10638) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - AUG 24, 2023
UPDATED: AUG 24, 2023 Bottle @ home. Well stored bottle (9 years). Dark brown body under a small, beige head. Quite alcoholic aroma, dark malt, chocolate and coffee. Taste is sweet, smooth roasted dark malt, caramel, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, good bitterness and warming alcohol. Fine body with sweet and alcoholic aftertaste. Nice, but still a bit rough edged after all this years.

Bottle split at Kennys CPH fart dungeon, thanks to Kenny, 10/05/18. Rich chestnut brown with a decent beige cap. Nose is bitter sweet fruit rinds, toffee, nutty, light varnish. Taste comprises dark malts, faint coffee grinds, light spice, caramel, fruit slice, boozey. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a kiss of alcohol. Ok strong ... a touch too hot and lacking balance.

tmoreau (9881) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - JUN 29, 2018
Shared 12 oz. bottle poured to a small snifter showing a murky, darkest brown color, with some ruby highlighting, a fair layer of tan froth, and spots of lacing. The nose presented sweetness, roast, mocha notes, char, and dark fruit skins. Medium bodied, with mild carbonation, the taste was similar, adding warmth, roasted & earthy bitterness, and some dryness to the finish.

Hotel tasting. Imperial Hotel. Semi opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and fairly well, modest fine carbonation. Fair amount of tangy dark chocolate. Little wet wood.. Fair bit of spice. Rich ripe spicy dark fruits. Light acidic finiah. Rich and tasty but also quite acidic.
