COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Crafting great beer is all about balance. At one end of the scale, if you’re brewing a delicate Western European lager, you have to ensure that the four ingredients work in harmony. These more delicate styles take incredible skill to brew well as there’s nowhere to hide any miscalculations or mistakes throughout production. Launching to the almost extreme opposite, the realm of IIPAs, balance, surprisingly, is still a defining factor. Instead of delicacy in balance, it’s now big flavour in balance. Simplistically, to achieve a big flavourful IIPA you need: Big Malt + Big Hops + Big Fermentation. It’s a bit of complicated symbiosis between these three requirements and each of these three provide multiple elements. The malt provides the complex spectrum of sugars for fermentation as well as the main structure and body of the beer. The hops contribute bitterness to balance the malt sweetness as well as resinous piney flavours and juicy fruity-citrusy aromas. The fermentation provides us with a big hit of fun juice (ethanol) and the vast array of incredibly important characterful aroma and flavour compounds. Not sure if that was too far off track, anyway, what you needed to take away from that was: Pirate Life IIPA is a big beer with big delicious fresh flavours that we hope you will enjoy by sticking it in your big mouth. Peace.

aussiealchemist (134) - Officer Victoria, AUSTRALIA - MAY 22, 2024
UPDATED: MAY 22, 2024 Pot at Pirate Life new South Melbourne venue. Pours clear gold orange with tight white head and lively carbonation. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, resin, dank and stone fruit with malt coming through. Flavour is very hop forward with sufficient malt balance. Taste is quite sweet which disguises the big bitterness that lingers. Mouthfeel is full but reasonably dry given the sweetness at first. Overall an excellent IIPA.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2022 Canned (from Ales by Mail). Deep amber colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is grass, fruits and some sweet malts. Flavour is toffee, sweet malts, some bready and mild biscuity elements with a bunch of fruits, nectar and grassy bitterness kicking in too. Easy to drink, yet big'n'bold.

craigeroo (60) - - SEP 21, 2019
UPDATED: SEP 21, 2019 Hoppy nose and flavour. Pours golden and slightly cloudy with a decent sized head and light carbonation. Bitterness in flavour and possibly hints at the 8.8% strength. Quite easy drinking so potentially dangerous. Not much malt flavour

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2019 Bu le 04/08/2019 From a can, Served in a glass.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2019 A BIG IIPA, (in a good way). The hop forward beers are my favourite from this brewery, and this one has it in spades. Plus a whack of sweetness/booziness.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2019 This was my first Pirate Life beer. Wonderful IIPA. Got a couple of 18 y.o.'s pretty hammered on just a couple of these in a shout. Young fellas didn't know what hit them. Great balanced beer with plenty of hops and the right amount of bready malt sweetness

simontomlinson (6672) - Lancashire, ENGLAND - APR 3, 2019
UPDATED: APR 3, 2019 Thin off white head quickly left a collar on a hazy light copper coloured, finely carbonated body. Stewed fruit, malt, pine & grapefruit. Medium bodied, tingly over the tongue with soft back. Malt forward tastes with stewed fruit, pine & grapefruit & a bitter tangy finish.

Samma (1000) - Fitzroy, AUSTRALIA - APR 2, 2019
UPDATED: APR 2, 2019 Dark amber. Loads of grassiness on nose plus some malt. Big and hoppy but for but with enough biscuit and crystal malts to end as a balanced belter of a beer.
