Chocolate truffles, cocoa, espresso coffee, burnt currants, the sweetness of a sherry - all come to mind when enjoying an Imperial Stout. A rich porter of English origin brewed to withstand the long voyage from London to Czarist Russia. The classic "Winter Warmer". Big, Strong, Malty Stout.

colui72 (4893) - Sassari, ITALY - MAY 14, 2023
UPDATED: MAY 14, 2023 An old fashioned Russian Imperial Stout in a bottle that's 7 years old. Not winter at the moment but it keeps raining, so it's perfectly fine. Aroma of roasted grain, dark chocolate, coffee, red fruits, cherry, leather and tobacco. Pours creamy, beautifully black, with a creamy tan head with eternal retention and lacing. Medium bitterness, very roasty and dark. Dark chocolate, cacao nibs, coffee, cherry, blackcurrant, leather and tobacco. Dry finish, no sweetness whatsoever. Clean. Not too thick body (I guess due to age), low carbonation, a lot of booze heat, but rather smooth. Cellar beer with its age, body as expected in a 7 y.o. bottle, but well kept and with layers of flavours. Solid.

Aroma is quite sweet though, chocolate, coffee and an aura of slightly burnt malts. Taste also carries already mentioned chocolate notes, a wee hint of licorice and burnt coffee. Actually, the burnt coffee notes almost turns acidic. That plays well with the earlier, sweeter notes. Finish is light ashy and dry. As solid as it gets, and a good counterweight towards todays modern pastry stouts.
