Commercial Description:
Jet Black and one to be savoured. The mouth feel is silky smooth, the nose has roasted malt and a touch of caramel. A rich deep mocha and coffee flavour, is accentuated with caramel and smoky flavours. Willamette and Goldings hops were used in 3 additions to create an ale with a big bitterness and an assertive hop character. This beer is served using a sparkler top to allow a lightly carbonated ale, yet with a lasting and beautiful white head.

This fine ale is only available from the brewery, on tap and served with the patience it deserves.

Bottle. I had been meaning to try this for a while and was not disappointed. Pours jet black with a fizzy tan head that diminishes to a ring around the top. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, dark chocolate, chicory, raisins and coffee. Flavour is slightly yeasty but otherwise very similar to the aroma. Mouthfeel is quite smooth and creamy but is also a little on the thin side for an imperial. Red Hill are one of my favourite Australian microbrewers and this I.S. is another winner.

Disappointing. I had high hopes for this. Nose is a muted chocolate and coffee. In th mouth it was thin, but there were some solid stout flavours. I think If I treated this as a normal stout (or a foreign export?) I would have enjoyed this more, but expecting an Imperial Stout I was let down. Good beer, poorly labeled. Still thanks to Nate for letting me try a beer I’ve been meaning to try for a while.

Bottle. Appears almost black with a small tanned head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, chocolate and dark fruit. I found this slightly too thin in the mouthfeel and perhaps lacking depth and balance overall. I had high hopes for this beer but a little disappointed. Will keep a bottle in the cellar and see if it improves over time.

Great stout. Picked one up at Dan M’s... probably the most expensive Oz beer in the store... But worth it! Great tan head, jet black body and lovely aromas. Coffee, malt, etc. with a nice warming alcohol kick. I expected more bitterness, but I still enjoyed this drop a lot. Looking forward to next years!

Bottled, thanks Fil. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of roasted malt as well as light notes of fruit and bread. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of hard roasted malt and bread as well as lighter notes of coffee and bitter chocolate, leading to a dry, bitter, and roasted finish.

Just released 2009 version. Another anticipated beer form one of Australia’s best micro-breweries. This release lacks the weight and density that last years had. However this is still a very good beer. Very dark brown hue with a short lived espresso coloured head. Aromas are of banana, coffee, creamy jersey caramel and mocha. Not as heavy on the palate as one would expect of an Imperial Stout. Very creamy on the palate initially with sweet roasted malt followed charry/nutty notes, coffee, alcohol warmth and mild but persistent hop bitterness. Good length too. Overall this is a very nice beer and easy to drink but a bit light for the style.

375ml botttle. 8.1% Dark tan head, that didn’t want to stay around for long, on a jet black body, with tawny tinges. Some vegemite notes on the aroma along with some rich chocolate. Taste is smooth, more coffee grinds, chocolate and a touch of liquorice and a little too easy to drink.
