The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes. FlacoAlto (4461) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JAN 15, 2024
UPDATED: JAN 15, 2024 750ml bottle, corked, caged, & foiled, labeled as 'Mikkeller Monk's Brew' bottle from around 2010 or so; Sampled January 2024. Doesn't seem like synthetic corks have any chance of holding carbonation over the long term, none of the beers with them I have recently opened from the cellar are anything but flat (this beer included). The beer is a concentrated amber color with some roasted brown tones to it. The aroma smells of prunes, raisins, nutty malt, hints of sherry and even a touch of roasted / toasted whole-grain bread. Definitely flat feeling as it hits the mouth, there is a hint of sweetness here, maybe more a suggestion from dark fruit esters (prune and raisin). The finish has a certain astringency to it, a touch of wet, warming alcohol spice and somehow a hint of smokiness. Flat and wet feeling, quite thin and really disappointing in a way I haven't seen in other aged beers. The oxidation character here is quite a bit more mellow than I was expecting, really it is like all the flavors have been muted and muddied more than anything else. So, in conclusion, synthetic corks are no good; it makes me wonder how this would have aged with a crown or cork.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2021 Brown with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma full of raisins, prunes and toffee. Very pleasant sniffing. Taste is mildly bitter. Body barely at medium—to light for the style. You need a bit of contemplative chewing to truly enjoy a beer of this caliber. Ends on a boozy note with lingering fruitiness. Pretty good with a few flaws that can be overlooked depending on the mood.
