Peaty, smokey nose with a touch of manuka honey. The mouth is unbalanced with only a faint hint of smokey and honey. Sweet. Much more like a Scotch ale than anything else. OK.

Bottled. A hazy reddish beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has strong notes of fruit as well as medium notes of malt, berries, and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty combined with notes fo beech wood smoke, as well as a light acidity, leading to a dry smokey finish. The alcohol leaves a ligth burn in the finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

2009 bottle. Very smokey indeed. Dark red amber. Light lasting head. Big smokey flavour. Smells like smoke and taste like sour smoke. Very sour. Very smokey.

Bottle from Regional. Pours a dark copper colour with an off white head. Smells smokey and slightly malty. Smokey, sweet, bacony and slightly bitter all at once. Goes down surprisingly easy.

On tap at Eureka in Dunedin. Courtesy of Donfardz64! Very very clear, vibrant ruby hue with an off-white head. Aroma immediately reminds me of smoky barbecue sauce or something savoury. Which is nice, but different. I like it. This beer would be a lot of fun to match with food. Flavours are much the same. some tanginess, and a lot of smoke. Like bacon... Very full bodied, not the best beer to drink all night, but lovely.

Bottle, fresh from the brewery (thanks to my amazing wife) on the first day of release for this season-- which happens to be Canada Day! OH YEAH! Let’s celebrate with a Smokin’ Bishop! Pours a beautiful deep copper with a thick soapy orange-tinted head that leaves clingy lace. Very enticing smoky wood aroma, not ashy, not really campfire either. Once your sniffer can get past the smokiness, there is some nice sweet malt under there with a hint of fruit. The smoke character is the most noticable flavour note also, but again, after spending some time with this brew the complexity becomes apparent: sweetly toasty, some burnt sugar, almond nuttiness, subtle beguiling fruit. The finish is nice and bitter, with a mild licorice-aniseed spiciness. Mouthfeel is soft, body is medium-heavy, alcohol is completely hidden. Truly outstanding! Happy Canada Day! Incidentally, this year’s batch has an ABV of 7%.

Bottle at Scotch Wine Bar, Blenheim. Pours copper with a small lingering beige head. Aroma of Smoked malt, wood and bacon. Mmm flavour of smoked malt, bacon and cheese. Medium bodied, very well balanced with a smooth, lingering bitterness. Delicious!
