COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

pindolaire (627) - SPAIN - SEP 13, 2023

dragnet101 (4474) - Birmingham, West Midlands, ENGLAND - MAY 22, 2023
UPDATED: MAY 22, 2023 Bottle from Beers of Europe and marks my 100th Belgium rating. Turned out to be a gusher which I wasn't prepared for and lost a quarter of it. Once in the glass it has a murky amber brown look with quickly dissipating head. Notes of liquorice, caramel, dark malts, prunes, hint of balsamic vinegar, light brown sugars. Warming alcohol heat on the way down but I didn't detect it in the taste. Very good depth to this - rich but not overdone. Medium to full bodied, some stickiness on the palate, fine carbonation.

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2023 Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy light caramel brown colour with a thinnish soapy looking off-white head. Aromas of dry dark fruits, toffee, caramel and candied sugar. Taste has more of the dry dark fruits, toffee, caramel and candied sugar. Also some spices and a little bit of warming alcohol. Very well balanced. Full body with a sticky like mouthfeel and average carbonation. Unique and very nice tasting Brune.

Paulaner.dk (125) - Silkeborg, DENMARK - MAR 6, 2023

flying_pig (3134) - IRELAND - JAN 8, 2023
UPDATED: JAN 8, 2023 330ml bottle from Beers of Europe (£2.69): Chestnut brown with a half cm, bubbly head that settles as a thin & patchy surface lacing. Rich & complex smelling, there's a sweet malt base with darker fruits on top; prunes, figs & dates with some sugars & faint toffee. The taste is similarly sweet with a malty backbone, a slightly effervescent feel that has the prunes & figs from the nose alongside the toffee & bread malts & caramel with sugars, a hint of spice & yeast to finish. It's rich, balanced & well-carbonated with a good balance between the malts & the darker fruit sweetness & most of the alcohol hidden too.
