COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11% abv, 2007 and 2008 - 13% abv 2011 - 14.5% abv 2012 - 15% abv 2013 - 14.9% abv 2014 - 14.4% abv 2015 - 14.2% abv 2016 - 13.9% & 13.8% abv 2017 - 14.1% abv 2018 - 14.7% & 15.2% abv 2019 - 14.7% 2020 - 14.6% 2021 - 14.4% Editor’s Note: Baudoinia Fulton & Wood Series offering (And the Low Storage entry from FoBAB 2012) is simply Bourbon County Stout aged in the same barrels. It has been alted as it offers no different recipe or barrel type simply the presence of a distillers fungus on the barrels that adds no distinct characteristic to the beer from the fungus itself except for possible oxygen exposure changes. While Brewers Intent indicates that they consider it a new beer, no true distinction aside from this oxidation amount and possible aging time differences separates the beers. It’s essentially a single barrel Bourbon County version something we have always treated as regular Bourbon County Stout in the past.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2023 2022 bottle tried on Christmas night 2023. Black with no head. Powerful with strong yet delicate flavours dominating. Drink slowly would be my advice as this is a potent powerful beer. Expected a great beer what I got was a nearly great beer. My strongest this year.

drpimento (7546) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 28, 2023
UPDATED: DEC 28, 2023 Appearances are opaque brownish black liquid with a very fine ring of bubbles around the edge. Aromas are roast, dark malt, oatmeal, cocoa and a hint of molasses. Flavors are similar to nose, bittersweet, molasses come out a bit more. Some oak. Very smooth. But not nearly as good as it used to be.

B-I-N-G-O_! HMFA This is over the top. Having this at the beertasting and it is divine! Luscious. Thick and rich. So much going on take forever to describe it all. Aroma, color, body, head, finish are unequaled. Damn fine.

chinhaez (415) - Ouray CO, Colorado, USA - DEC 1, 2023
UPDATED: DEC 1, 2023 Pint bottle 2020 bottling. Opaque black pour with a small tan head that soon disappears. The aroma is big and bold with cocoa, vanilla, sawdust, and licorice. The taste mirrors the aroma, with lots of dark chocolate, vanilla, some whiskey, and a bit of charred oak. The palate is full and oily with soft carbonation. Finishes long and semi-sweet with lingering bourbon and vanilla. Overall: top shelf stuff. paired supremely well with some gruyere cheese.

MicroGrog (3249) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - MAR 3, 2023
UPDATED: MAR 3, 2023 2019 pour @Kool Keg. Tulip. Shiny cola, oatmeal head.. Earth, veg, sharp malt, smooth whiskey. Rich, mellow, dense, silky. Easy whiskey, carob & burnt coconut. Great burnt brown sugar edge to everything that lingers. Light chocolate near the end. Subtle oxidation. Right amount of constant pith bitterness. Really good, but you can tell it's not what it was.

Funknmilla (812) - WAYNE, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 12, 2023
UPDATED: FEB 12, 2023 2017 Super bowl sipper! (#57)...this pours just about straight black. Just a hint of light brown along the rim with light. Before I really get a chance to breathe it in I sip. Ridiculously creamy...wow. For all my senses Im getting dark chocolate... molasses..brown sugar. Sweet malt and essence of some fruit. Raisin prune even a little cherry.
