hopscotch (4477), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Mar 26, 2007 Bottle... This beer rocks!... Clear, very dark crimson ale with a mid-sized, creamy, beige head. Great retention. The aroma is a sticky-sweet, malty swirl of brown sugar, caramel, dates, light molasses and medium sherry esters. The flavor is sweet and malty. Like the nose there are heaps of gooey caramel, medium sherry and very light smoke with moderate bitterness that actually accentuates the malt by allowing it to thrive, but not fester. Not at all cloying. Whispers of dried plum and light molasses. Ultra full-bodied and syrupy with medium carbonation. Caramel-sweet, cocoa powder-bitter finish. A big SHOUT goes out to beerbuzzmontreal for providing the bottle of this world class Scotch ale!
SuzyGreenberg (934), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 27, 2008 12 oz. bottle - thanks a bunch biegman for making the extra effort for this; pours rich brown with thin white head; mostly clear with considerable lacing going down; aromas of sweet caramel, but almost a little like ethanol too; very thin body and a little sweet; improved a little, but this was kind of an odd one overall WorldofBeers (1), Québec,, Quebec, Canada does not count Jul 29, 2008 This is simply the best beer i have ever drinked.... a pefect mix between a prestine scotch ale with slight caramel taste and a very bitter beer ( about 60 IBU ).This beer takes 6 months to ferment so it can only distribute soo much wich explains somewhat the cost of this golden-reddish delight. A must for beer lovers !! Stine (1335), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jul 21, 2008 The notorious "new" batch. Cold clean red. Chocolate soda fountain, root beer candy, wet earth, alcohol aroma. Raspberries in vanilla. Sugary, damp, and distantly salty. Salted rye bread. Raw.
Coarse wooden chocolate flavor. Not rich and bold like an earthy, semisweet, mostly real cocoa chocolate, but dry and sugary like an extract syrup. The fruit character is bitter and tannic, like the skin of a plum or a dried date. Smooth, velvety almond sweetness in a rich and sharp spirit-like texture, with plenty of mapley woodiness. Still unpolished. No subtlety in the delivery.
Medium-full palate is softly carbonated and surprisingly not sticky. Tinny mineral bitterness precedes a lasting, dry rubbing of alcohol and caramelized almonds in the finish. Rather frustrating. Its redeeming qualities are ever present, but suffocated, and what might be most annoying is that there isn’t some obvious flaw lending the weight. It just never quite arrives. Dany was right.
