DrBayern (879), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Apr 30, 2008 500 ml. bottle from CelticBrew and shared with him. Big, loosely structured foamy head that collapses to a thin layer rather quickly, but good lace nonetheless. Earthy, fruity aroma, with notes of toffee and a hint of spice. Medium body with lively effervescence that helps to offset some of the stickiness. Decidedly sweet up front as the caramel maltiness takes over, and the soft bitterness comes on slowly for some welcome balance. Still, there is a lingering sweetness through the finish. Generally, I like my beer somewhat more bitter and drier, but this was very enjoyable and well crafted.
JCB (828), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 30, 2008 750ml from From the Vine, Columbus. I had no idea this was retired. Anyways, it’s a very solid dubbel, more refreshing and less cloying than a number of lesser offerings. Very lively pour with a fast-rising head, there’s plenty to admire in the handsome deep brown pour. Strong raisin notes emerge in the aroma, along with some candied malts, caramel, and just a hint of pepper and yeast. Crisp and active mouthfeel, almost champagne-like in its intensity sometimes. This doesn’t really detract from the style, but it sure is quirky with the heavy and sweet flavors going on. The finish is extremely dry, unexpectedly enough, but it works with this overall distinctive take on the style. Nice one, compares favorably with Midnight Sun’s Maitress du Moine. hotstuff (3012), Indiana, USA Jun 28, 2008 Corked and caged bottle . Medium sized extremely fizzy beige head that mostly diminished, sparse amount of lacing, cloudy, and a red brown hue. The aroma was malt, caramel, sweet, some hop notes, fruity, spicy, yeasty, alcohol, and some tartness. Very nice! The flavor was just as nice...sweet, fruity, malt, caramel, spicy, yeasty, the ABV was noticeable but not overdone, and a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel was mildy tingly and semi-dry. A medium bodied beer. A very, very tasty beer, tasted better as it warmed up and even had a bit of a warming sensation to it and would be a nice beer to have on hand during the winter months IMO. Easy to drink, worthy of a try and a beer I’ll drink again if the opportunity presents itself. fishingnet (700), Brandon, Florida, USA Jun 23, 2008 Bottle courtesy CigarCityBrew. Pours amber with a large long lasting off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of sweet fruit, caramel, yeast, and sweet tarts. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and a spicy yeasty finish. Very good. oh6gdx (4947), Vaasa, Finland Jun 18, 2008 Bottled. Orangeish amber colour with huge slightly off-white head. Aroma is some yeast, fruits, alcohol and mild spicing. Flavour is fruits, spices, alcohol and yeast. While cold not the most exciting thing, but as it warms up it gets smoother. zeke626 (173), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jun 8, 2008 750 mL bottle, pours a burnt orange/amber body with generous off-white, foamy head. Quite a bit of sediment in the pour. Aroma of citrus, banana, belgian malts, and a hint of clove. Flavors of caramel malts, belgian malts, banana, bread, yeast, and clove. Sweet malt finish with a biscuit aftertaste. Slight alcohol burn in the finish.
