First experiences, on tap and from the bottle in 2005:

The Lure:
Elaborate malty grain, large haystacks, and stacked cereal bowls. Light citrus and oatmeal, this is obviously very well-brewed.

The Festivities:
Superb malt extraction develops apricots, caramel and bread crusts to form a delicious French toast emulation. Earthy hop bitterness drapes the ending. Strongly carbonated, but it massages the malt to make it release more beauty, so no problem at all. Immensely superior to Budvar in the malty pilsner category. 3.9/5

Transcendence:
Playing in the windmill and not caring about getting dirty.

Second experience, on tap at Praha’s Kralovstvi café:
Lightly fruity honeyed malts overcame the subtle hop character in a well-rounded but storyless and rather commercial 12-degree Bohemian Pilsener. After having had a few of their beers over the years, I wonder if they’ve taken a turn for the commercial...3.4/5

Bottle, bought @ a corner pub in Brno.
Pours clear golden with a fine, medium, creamy, white head. Fine duration and light lacing. Mild aroma, some grass, apple and sweet malts. Okay mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Flavour is crisp malty, a bit of green apple and a clear, defining, hoppy bitterness to finish it off. Good one.

Bottled. Golden colour with mediumsized creamy head. Aroma is malty, slight fruityness along with some grass and slightly bread-doughy notes. Flavour is quite sweet malts along with some slight fruity notes. The end is grassy and quite mouthdrying.

On tap at the Czech Inn, Dublin. Full mouth feel, grain, malt, bread. Complex stuff. I would have liked more bitterness, but it is very fine as it is.. Lingering bittersweet finish, peppery.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
How: Tap at Kralovstvi, Prague
The look: Clear golden body with a medium white head
To me a typical Czech Světlý 12° and above is: Well malted body with plenty of biscuits and cereals. Sweetness level is in the light-medium range with some honey flavours and a light caramel presence (3/4 honey, 1/4 caramel). Fruity flavour limited to a light citrus flavour. Medium carbonation. Finish is dry and moderately bitter with a light citric touch. After-taste of dry grassy/herbal hops with a light dry spiciness character.
This one: As above, very typical and average for the style.

(Rating #1524)
