Commercial Description:
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Bottle 500 ml
Appearance : hazed bright golden brew with rather large white snowy top. 3+
Nose: gurken! Mein Got ! spice , clove hit of grainy sourness with vinegar , aroma of good ogorki
Flavor/Palate : spiced ,peppery with rather light yet smooth body. Slightly sour , spicy , good dose of clove. Seems kind of wild yet this works here quiet well.

pale yellow with a highly herbal flavor, more like a tea than a beer. No bitter bite, just spices. Very smooth though.

Sample @ Coles German Tasting, Light yellow pour. Spicy ginger aroma. Herbal, ginger, spicy, lemony citrus taste. Some tartness. Floral aspects. Different & interseting

Pours bright canary yellow with a thin white head. Intense spice aroma of ginger, anise, lemon, peppermint, spearmint and cherries. This seems more like an elixer for a belly ache than beer. Very thin body, huge herbs and spices to the taste. Finishing aroma is wildflowers. Unusual and worthwhile.

Unlike anything that I ever tried. Aroma is reminiscent of soap and anise. Cloudy, fizzy and light. Rosemary and Bay leaf dominate the palate. Finishes with a strong bay leaf presence.

Served in pint glass. The color of golden straw...like Rapunzel’s hair. Spicy-herbal aroma. Initially picked up a lot of ginger on the palate. As the beer warmed, other flavors came out to play like an herb garden dancing on the tongue: rosemary, bay, anise...and more ginger. Hints of citrus. Spritzy carbonation. Quite refreshing and flavorful.

Colour as freshly pressed pineapple juice; very carbonated to medium, irregular and lively white head. Very strong aromatic smell of fresh herbs as lavender, rosemary, bog myrtle, ginger, and other similes. Smells like the mix for roast lambrack - and a pot from the bathroom shelf. Very obvious rosemary in the tate - the lambrack reappearing - or Mediterranean crisps - spritzy sourness. Refreshing despite the soapy aromatics, the CO² undoubtely helping. Medium bodied at best. Interesting? Absolutely and more so. Refreshing? No doubt. Drinkable? Ye-es... but I doubt in large quantities. Many thanks to Der Doppelbock for this one!

16.0oz bottle, from State Line Liquors (Elkton, MD). Pours hazy straw-yellow color, topped with a thin white head that fades to a ring of bubbles. Interesting and enticing aroma is dominated by ginger, with contributions from anise, white pepper, green tea, and lemon. Lemon, ginger, and tea are the predominant flavors, with highlights of white pepper, basil, salt, and wheat. The flavor is not as impressive as the aroma, but its another really nice effort from Dr. Briem.
