Commercial Description:
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Courtesy of fishingnet. Pours clear golden. Aroma is spicy, perfumy with anis. Taste is very sweet, loaded with interesting spices and herbs anis, ginger, rosemarin. Ligh malt. Reall wish the Germasn would come out with more interesting beers such as this one.

Bottle. Pours a hazy pale golden with a small white head. Aroma of anise, bay leaves, rosemarie, and other spices I can’t pin down. Taste is the same as aromabut slightly less prominent. Medium thin mouthfeel with a mild to moderate amount of bitterness from the herbs and spices with a dry slightly tart finish. Very good.

Courtesy of fishingnet. Pours very pale gold with faint haze and bright white head. The aroma is vibrant, bold and perfumy. Wow. I get bay leaves, anise, rosemary, assorted spices, flower pedal notes and a hodgepodge of lighter and less discernable aromatics. The taste is big, crisp, refreshing and just plain good. I get the bay leaves as noted in the nose to go along with mild lemon notes, rosemary, anise and orange peel. The flavor has a lot going on. Lively tasty and well crafted brew. Makes me wonder why there aren’t more out there like this.

The aroma is nice and floral with herbs, spices, bread, yeast, ginger, fruit, and barley malt. The appearance is cloudy and gold with a large white head. The flavor is slightly watery but balanced and complex with a hefe like bubble gum, clove, and banana taste. The palate is thin but OK. Overall a very very good beer.

In short: An light but tasty spicy herbal beer-lemonade. Very interesting.
How: Bottle, consumed fresh a few days after purchase
The look: Cloudy banana colour body topped by a very small white head
In long: Nose of coriander, spices and lemonade. Taste is a bit like a spiced Berliner Weisse with crisp hay, coriander, lemongrass, white pepper, some alfalfa sprouts, grass, grapefruit, lemon, herbs. The beer is overall rather juicy but the finish is dry and herbal. Body is light but doesn’t feel empty. A overall sensation that there’s a lot of spices and herbs in this beer which makes it very tasty but less refreshing than it could have been, almost hard to take big sips. Ha the 13th century, a time of wars and crusades. A time when men were real men, and women were, well, kind-of-men.

500 mL bottle received via trade with jjpm74. Pours hazy yellow with a small, fizzy, white head, mostly diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (hay, straw, meal), average hops (flowers, grass, spruce, citrus) with notes of pepper, banana, pear, and dust. Light bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation, and a chalky finish. Long duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.
