Commercial Description:
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Stemware sampler at local beer seminar. Yellow pour, not much head, ring of bubbles, at best, and no lacing. The aroma was bay leaf and floral notes. Ginger and rosemary were more detectable in the flavor. Another potpourri of scents and flavors.

Bottle pours a straw color with a decent head. The aroma is strangely perfumed, strong spices, and slightly sour. The flavor is wild, very spiced (can taste the bay leaf), ginger, lemon, and minty. the palate is thin and pretty refreshing. This is odd, but fun none the less. Wow, it really is different.

Pours light yellow with a whitish internal haze. Smells like bay leaf shaving cologne. Mouthfeel is both creamy and a tad sour with fizzy carbonation. Very interesting tastes, its a sipper until I am used to it, and then it goes easier. This brewery is high quality

Strong Gentian aroma with a light amount of ginger. Hazy yellow color with a small white head. Very spicy beer menthol is dominate in the beginning fading to a biitter spice finish.

Root beer like flavors. Sour notes on finish. Baking soda like flavor, but more in a minerally type way. Reminds me of some "medicinal spring water" I have tasted. Starts with pine aromas, ends in a citrus alkaline-y taste. Similar flavors to the Czech herbal liquor Becherovka.

Bottle shared by thickfreakness. Thanks! Pours a cloudy bright light orange. Smell is minty, ginger, saison like with coriander and spice. Taste is mint, rosemary, and is smooth and herbal. Vicks vapor rub like in a fairly good way. Very strong flavor of herbs and spice, but not bad, actually.

Sampled on 12/31/2008. This traditional ale pours a slightly hazy yellow gold color from a 500ml bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with nice retention. The aroma is spicy, floral and herbal. A medium bodied ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. No hops but its plenty herbal and floral with lots of spices in this one, ginger, caraway and bay leaves. Kind of tart and it reminds me a little of a Berliner Weiss. Nice beer, very nice change of pace. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and tart.

Pours pale yellow with a white head that has some retention. Aroma is unique, unlike any brew I’ve had close to Berliner Weisse but way different. Ginger, lemon and rosemary dominate but it’s a bbig salad of spice. Tastes like a ginger beer with some mint mouthwash and an almost medicinal aftertaste like alka seltzer. Finish is somewhat dry and refreshing. Not too bad, very drinkable.
