Commercial Description:
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Bottled. Awesome aroma, loaded with of spices, including lots of anise, lavender, ginger, yeast, even some chili. Fantastic. So complex. Has a lovely though subtle flavor, not nearly as spicy as the aroma, with a light, and a touch tart body. Easy drinking and refreshing, with an awesome complexity. I absolutely love this series they are doing.

Pours to a hazy pale yellow body and thin white head. The aroma is bay leaves and rosemary. Smells of beef stew. The flavor is very savory. Light anise, rosemary, and bay leaves. "Spicy" but not "spiced". More main dish soup-like. Light acid-less lemon flavor.

50cl bottle from Kingdom Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a cloudy bright yellow color with a thick and foamy one finger white head that settles quickly. Aroma is zesty and spicy with clear notes of ginger, some slight honey, and an earthy herbal essence. Flavor is interesting -- reminds me of a cross between a spiced citrus juice and menthol. Clear notes of lemon and zest with strong herbs and spices. Generally light body but with a tangy and spicy finish that lingers long after the beer is gone. Interesting ale.

500ml bottle. bright straw yellow color and very cloudy. Floral potporri aroma with hints of lemon and spice. Some caraway and anise seed. HUGE FLOWER AROMA. Sweet suagry malt flavor. Tastes like a cold herb tea. Finishes with ginger lime.

From a brown bottle - Pours a cloudy pale orange color. Not the prettiest to look at. Smells of flowers, spices, cloves. Below average carbonation and light on the lacing. First sip is very complex with flowey spices and herbs all making their presence known. Tastes like Patchouli or the inside of a Grateful Dead concert. A very interesting beer!

16oz bottle. Pours a hazy straw color with a white fizzy head. Nose is tons of mint and ginger and a little bit of yeast. Very cool complex aroma with lots of spices floating around. The flavor is awesome and refreshing. This was a big hit at the tasting. Tons of spicyiness up front but no hops obviously so no bitterness but a faint sweetness and pungernt tartness from the ginger and rosemary. Light wheat taste, this leaves you wanting more, a great summer beer!

I wish I could rate it higher because I applaud a German brewery for turning out a brew like this, experimenting and Reinheitsgebot be damned! But I’m not all that crazy about it. Nice pour, a hazy light straw body with a tall creamy head. The ginger and anise dominate the aroma, and my schnozz can pick out little else. There’s a sweet wheatiness to the flavor and a strong handed spicing on top of it,nearly smothing the malts. You could tell me it’s rosemary and bay leaf or anything else and I couldn’t naysay you. The finish is dry with a medicinal spiciness. More interesting than enjoyable.
