Commercial Description:
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

pale yellow with a highly herbal flavor, more like a tea than a beer. No bitter bite, just spices. Very smooth though.

Straw yellow with 1 cm of white head. Aroma is very gingery with a hit of coriander and lemon. Perhaps all the delicate spicing was wasted on me, but it tastes like a standard wit with ginger and lemon.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy light to medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), with notes of oregano, sage, lemon, licorice, ginger. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Relies heavily on spices/herbs in the nose for interest, which although not unexpected just comes off as a mish-mash of adjuncts. It’s pleasant, but mostly as a novelty.

Wow. Nice beer. Friends and I agree this would be a nice summer beer. The combination of aromas and flavors almost seem a little lemony. And pickles. Very refreshing. Poured with small white head that lasts and no lace. Color is a hazy light yellow. Flavor is similar to nose but lots more going on and really quite good. A lot of this kind of beer I’m not so partial to but this works. Body is very good and great carbonation. Long finish of the same flavs. Don’t really think it’d be a session beer though.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy, light golden hue that is strewn with tiny yeast floaties. A small, fizzy, off-white head leaves sticky ribbons of lacing on the glass. The nose shows a light, clean, grainy malt base with plenty of complimentary, bright spicing. Notes of sage, lemon peel, coriander, and carraway pove light and appropriately bitter, filling in the hop void nicely. Flavors follow suit, resembling a spicy witbier more than anything. Lemon is prominent, as are the coriander and sage. The palate is pretty light bodied, clean, and crisp. It’s quite refreshing, in fact. Nice brew.

500mL bottle poured into pint glass. Pours very light - a hazy straw with a big fluffy white head that recedes fairly quickly to a small collar. Not much lacing to speak of. The aroma is fantastic and super pungent. I can smell the ginger from across the room and when I get closer, it’s just a massive mix of all kinds of herbs and spices with some light fruit hiding underneath...way underneath. The taste is extremely pungent as well with an almost minty character. There is plenty of ginger and anise and probably some of the other spices that I couldn’t identify if I had to. There is a definite grassy, slightly earthy farmhouse thing going on as well with a dry finish. The mouthfeel is light bodied and lively on the palate with strong carbonation. It’s extremely refreshing and tingly. I’ve looked at this on the shelf of the local store for ages and finally bought it. The herbs are awesome, especially in the nose, though it gets a tad tiring in the taste. Either way, a solid and very unique beer.

Bottle 500 ml
Appearance : hazed bright golden brew with rather large white snowy top. 3+
Nose: gurken! Mein Got ! spice , clove hit of grainy sourness with vinegar , aroma of good ogorki
Flavor/Palate : spiced ,peppery with rather light yet smooth body. Slightly sour , spicy , good dose of clove. Seems kind of wild yet this works here quiet well.
