Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottle into tumbler. Aromas and flavors of light sour wheat - very refreshing. Pale light body with active carbonation. I am really diggin this style and wish there were more Berliner Weisses out there.

Pours a cloudy yellow with a big loud white head. Looks like a watered down fruit drink. The aroma has very light malts with pear and lemon. Has a nice puckering character. Very similar to the local Berliner Weisse beers I have had in Berlin, but with a bit more care in the presentation.

Bottle. Tart lemon aroma. Tastes of bread, yeast, lemon tartness. Delicious and refreshing beer. One of the best Berliner Weisses I have had.

Bottle from South Bay Drug. Hazy lemon gold color with a very large white head. Aromas of yeast and citrus. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Quite zesty in a citrus mode. Slightly lactic. Slighty bitter. Astringent. Puckerish. Probably prevents scurvy.

Bottle. Pale, faint grapefruit/lemon color. No head. Lightly hazy and moderate carbonation. Yeasty, citrusy, lemon, lime. Doughy and spicy to the taste. Tangy with some bitterness on tongue at finish.

Excited to see this beer show up in our market, we don’t get many Berliner Weisses in town, so this was a treat. Cloudy yellow pour with a small white head. Tart lemon citrus nose. Wheaty and excellent lemony sourness. Perfectly drinkable and refreshing.

(10/15/08) Bottle at Map Room in Chicago. Clear golden color with a medium white head that falls rather quickly. Aroma of fruits (some apricot, pineapple and citrus), wheat and a bit of lactic acid. Sourish flavor with fruits, citrus, some wheaty tartness and yogurt notes. Medium-bodied with very strong carbonation. A good refreshing beer but not as good as real Berliner Weisses (Schultheiss and Kindl).

tart smell up front. crazy carbonation with huge head. super clear and light in color. head doesn’t stick much, no lacing. very tart that catches you behind the gills, but finishes out dry leaving you wanting more - like a warhead. first taste is harsh, but onces your taste buds adjust, they will crave more, more, more. amzing complex for such a light beer. probably rivals duvel on complexity. An amazing sour funky beer. This is what I want to drink when I get done with yardwork - by the case.
