Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

2008 Flour City Brewfest. Yellow pour with a large white head. Aroma is dry with some hops and light citrus. Flavor becomes crisp with citrus, and some light hops. Nice.

Poured from a 50cl bottle at GOBF ’08...poured hazy golden yellow w/ a quickly diminishing fizzy white head. Nose of citrus, green apple, sour white grapes, yeast, and some grains. The flavor is a well represented mix of the above with no one flavor being dominant. The beer is sweet, but has an acidic tartness to it. The palate was on the lite side of medium bodied with a champange like carbonation. This was a nice treat in the heat we had that day! Very refreshing!

bottle - Pours cloudy yellow with a two finger, somewhat fizzy head. It smells like yeast, wheat, and some of that funky bacteria. The flavor is tart citrus, wheat malt, and a little funk. It’s certainly an interesting beer and is fairly tasty. I found it too thin at first, but as it warms the flavor fills out better as is so often the case.

Pour goes into the bottle clear but clouds up to a golden solid blanket. Nice head and the lacing gives testimony to where beer once was. Aroma is that of tart fruit. The first sip yields banana at the fore, followed by a citrus tartness and slight sourness over a thick wheat base. Some spices accent the complex flavors. There is a lot going on in this and this is about as good of a wheat beer as I’ve had. I’m stating that this is the best 5% abv beer in the world, bar none.

Bottle received via Secret Santa summer 2008. Pours hazy yellow with a large, rocky, white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (hay, straw, meal), average hops (grass, lemon), heavy yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of grape, pineapple, and dust. Light bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Pours a cloudy dishwater sort of color with a massive fizzy white head. Aroma is a yeast malt and lemonade. Flavor is nice and sharp with a good bit of malt and acidity. Very nice flavor. Maybe not terribly complex, but very tasty.

500ml Bottle: Aroma of yeast, dust, wheat, lemon, lactic acid, and fruit. Poured yellow/corn/sun in color with a huge, fizzy, off-white head that shrank but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Very sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet and lightly sour. Tastes of fruit, lemon, yeast, wheat, ginger ale, and citrus. Medium body. Tingly texture. Lively carbonation. Sweet, dry finish. Over carbonated.
