Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

I didn’t really care for this one. Probably just don’t like the style. Pours a cloudy light yellow. Sour lemon aroma. Tastes like lemonade. Thin and carbonic.

Golden-yellow in colour, thin white coloured head, light lacing. The aroma is lightly acidic and sour, wheaty, floral, grassy, herbal. The flavour is sharp, mild sourness, some cheese, herbal, lots of lemon citrus. Mildly acidic mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes tangy, citrus, acidic and dry.

Pretty nice, a stronger Berliner in terms of alcohol % but you wouldn’t know it. An excellent thirst quencher.

500ml bottle obtained in a trade with kkearn, thanks Keith.
Opened on December 25, 2007.

This Berliner Weisse pours a medium yellow gold color from a 50cl bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is tart lemons, yeast and some malts. A medium bodied Berliner Weise The malts are cereal and grain, some papaya and orange. Its tart, but not overpoweringly tart. Lively carbonation. A nice tart and refreshing summer beer. The lower alcohol content would make this a nice summer session beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly tart.

500ml bottle. This beer is fun. Hazy bright pale pink pour with a slightly pink tint, I think. Bubbly frothy white head. Yeasty tart lemon, zest, and yeast as well as citrus and bread. Lovely sour dry finish. Refreshing as hell. If this were cheaper, I’d drink it all summer long...

500 ml bottle courtesy of pepsican. Pours a cloudy yellow-orange color with a small white head that soon dissipates. No lacing. The aroma is relatively mild with wheat, sour papaya and some honey. The flavor is sweet and sour lemons, honey and melons rounding out the sides. The mouthfeel is silky with lively carbonation. The finish is dry, short and clean. Overall: This is a superb thirst quencher. Loved it.

The aroma is sour wheat, sour kraut, barley, and yeast. The appearance is hazy with gold color and a nice head. The flavor is sour but not overly so and like the aroma. The palate is thin but just right. Overall it’s good.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Very hazy pale golden with a dense, white head. Tart, youghurt-like aroma. Medium body with a soft mouthfeel. Piquant, tart and lightly wheaty accents with a whiff of yeast and citrus. Vague acidity in the finish also. Interesting, less challenging but more quaffable than your normal Berliner Weisse. 270408
