Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottle - Suspect a spoiled sample. Yelolow color with no head retention. Tart sweet aroma. Fruity tart flavor with a hint of lemon. This style is sometimes mixed with a syrup. I’d suggest doing that if this is how it tastes..

Pale yellow with a hazy look. Nice mid-sized frothy head. Aroma is sour and lemony citrus with a barny noe. Flavour was also sour with a weaty and yeasty flavour. Tart and dry.

Hazy lemony yellow, witbierish appearance. Grainy aroma, wet dog, leaves, lightly tart fruit (gummy bears). Empty grainy flavor, tart, undersweetened. Surprisingly transparent flavor, very clean, no aftertaste whatsoever, no yeast development. Almost imperceptible bitterness, very sharp carbo. Dry lemonade, uninteresting.

A very refreshing lemony beer. Remarkably refreshing and easy to drink. This may be my summer beer of choice this year. I really hope that this style starts becoming more popular as it is a wonderful change of pace to many of the other classical german brews.

Bottle 500ml
Appearance: Thick, cloudy, autumn fog like . Milky honey gold in color. Fine fizzy top.
Nose : fruity wheat character , stronger than usually found hints of alcohol. Sweet gooseberry feel and red apple. Yeasty ,esters ending show. 7+
Flavor/Palate : Soft sourness , citric , wheat grain oriented ale. Softer , smoother at finish. Tart front with wheat midlle. Good Berliner.

16.9 ounce bottle shared by grant. Sweet, sugary, herbal, floral aroma with plenty of lemon citrus notes. Aroma is not overly sour or acetic, which is unlike other samples of this style that I have had. Moderately hazy blonde body with small, feeble, quickly dissipating, listless head. No lacing at all. Starts tart, lemony, and sour before it becomes a little grainy and cereal-like. A few yeasty banana esters make a cameo. Finishes with a nice, light sweetness. Pretty straight-forward and drinkable. Not as intensely sour as other Berliner Weisse beers that I have had.

Tried at Stuffed Sandwich for $7. A little steep, but I’ve been eager to try this for some time now. They sell it at HWC, but I haven’t been motivated to try it. I like sours, so I’m going to rate this higher than normal. Sourness is very mild. lower than I expected, actually lower than the 2006 St Ambrois barleywine I had yesterday. Light beer. Yellow color. soda like carbonation: Large bubbles floating to the top and popping. Smell is somewhat BMC-ish. Nice feel on the tongue. Easy to drink. Pretty decent. Kind of like a well made pale lager.

Pours a hazy golden yellow color with a white head. Aroma is wheat, brett, tart fruit, and a touch of earthyness. Flavor is wheaty, fruit, tart, some funkyness, and a earthy finish.
