Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

How good this beer is really depends on when in the bottle you get to it. The top half is light and champagne-like; the bottom half has a fruity taste and looks... well, like semen. I’d go out of my way for the top half of a bottle. Not so much the bottom half.

Thanks to Jim for bringing the bottle. Pale yellow with a large white head and mild chunks on the end. Aroma of light pale malt, mild sourness, lemon and citrus. Taste is mildly sour, with a fruity and mild tart aftertaste. Decent.

Hazy golden coloured body with a thinnish white head. Aroma of lemons, banana, spice and a touch of bubble gum - nice! Light-bodied; Mild malty flavour from wheat and citrus with a touch of spice, some yeast and more banana flavours than in the smell. Aftertaste shows a nice mellow finish with some light alcohol, a dose of yeast and more mellow wheat characteristics. Overall, a pretty nice beer - definitely shows well in the summer heat, but the character complexity really comes out! I sampled this 500 mL bottle purchased from German Gourmet in Falls Church, Virginia, sampled on 07-August-2009 at home in Washingotn.

( 500ml bottle) pours a cloudy yellow, great head. Nose is sweet, sour, with spices, and some tarness. The taste is very tart in a great way, lemon zest, very carbonated with a nice light body and a very easy drinking beer. Nothing here disappointed. Like a sour without being overly so!

Hazy golden with a lingering white head. Lightly tart aroma with a mild grainy malt sweetness. Light/medium bodied. Good flavors of bready light wheat malts, with lightly tart apple skin, then a mild pit fruit sweetness to finish.
