ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Sep 29, 2007 Bottle courtesy of The Epeeist, thanks Chris! Pours a cloudy golden straw color with a thick pillowy white head. Aroma is grainy, pale malts, yeast, some citrus. Flavor is citrus, grains, pale malt, yeast. Palate is medium to light bodied, medium carbonation, finishes tart and tangy. Good stuff, on a hot day!! RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Sep 29, 2007 Pours a clouded straw gold with a very sizeable brighter white head. Nose is yeasty and wheat. Touch of citrus. Just the nose you want on a weisse. Flavor is extremely tart and tangy, so much so that it really grabs the back of your mouth. Very strong citrus tones. Long lasting lighter aftertaste combines with a lot of small bubbles on the tongue and a good liquid feel. Heavily drinkable, though that first taste really hit the back of my mouth and sent me for a spin. After that though it was very smooth sailing. Well worth trying. Even though the price tag was a wee bit high. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Sep 26, 2007 A beauty of a pour, looks like a solid Belgian with its golden fizz and cloudy body. The aroma is pleasantly pungent, the sort of whiff you might get from a solid pinot grigio or something. But the taste is just rocking, with a very crisp and refreshing core that’s shot through with a lovely sour apple flavor (maybe pink grapefruit, depending on your mood). Awesomely refreshing and just complex enough to satisfy the beer geek in all of us. TheBeerOrg (1563), Kentucky, USA Sep 26, 2007 Pours bright hazy golden with a fully receding off white head. Aroma of sour apple, white grapes, lactic yeast. Taste is citric, with lively acidity and notes of white grape, banana, and finishes with a crisp wheatiness. Mouthfeel is light bodied, tart with lively carbonation. Crisp and refreshing, not very sour. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Sep 23, 2007 Pours a mildly hazy pale yellow with a frothy two finger head that fades quickly to a thin cap. The lacing is a bit thin, leaving just a few rings behind. A little later the foam almost fades completely away.
Smell; this has a wheat malt dominated aroma at first, but as this warms up a bit some lemons, tart apples and a slightly musty aroma come out.
Taste; the wheat flavor is not quite as strong as i was expecting after the nose, but there’s still enough to let you know that this is still a wheat beer. A mild mustiness come through in the middle followed by tart lemons and a bit of honey. Not quite as tart as I was expecting for a Berliner weiss, but still pretty darn good.
Mothfeel is light to medium bodied with a light carbonation that helps make this a refreshing warm weather beer. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Sep 21, 2007 Gorgeous pour...opaque apricot color with a bursting, soapy head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is light and is mostly sour citrus with hints of wheat. Flavor is very different than anything else I’ve ever had. At first, I wasn’t particularly impressed, but after each sip, became more and more of a believer. Very dry like many white wines as the dryness emerges very late. Drink is hiighly acidic with strong flavors of sour citrus, this beer keeps you coming back for more. Definitely a fan of this style beer; will look to find another Berliner for comparison in the future! beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 20, 2007 The pour reveals a cloudy golden color with a thick white head that diminishes to a thin one. The aroma is very sharp and promises a refreshing flavor, there’s sourness, bananas, maybe citrus, cloves and bubble-gummy yeast. In the mouth, there’s a highly refreshing sour flavor with fruits, cloves and bubble-gummy yeast. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and medium to lively carbonation. Hmmm, too bad this style is hard to find, especially in North-America, I really like berliner=weisses and this one is very good. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Sep 18, 2007 Very dense white head, as whipped eggwhite, but not very lasting; verdigris-yellow beer. Fresh lemony-acidic nose, but with obvious (summer)grain as underbuild; slightly lactic ending. Again first lemony/citrussy, but with a backing as from a very fine, light consommé , stock-ish. Celeri, some grain; ending quite tart. Extremely refreshing, very titillating MF. A good Berliner Weisse is always a treat. But historic or not; believe it or not; I prefer the Schultheiss. Thanks, Seb!
