ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA Sep 17, 2007 Bottle. Pours a murky pale yellow with a white head; it looks like cider. Big wheat aromas with a lactic note. Powerfully lactic and sour. Prominent wheat flavors, lemongrass and a banana note I’d assume is from the yeast but the lactic notes really have a stranglehold on the flavors. Surprisingly drinkable- the first Berliner Weisse I’ve been able to finish (not sure if that bodes well for the beer though). Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Sep 17, 2007 Murky, yeasty yellow-orange body with strong carbonation emanating from the yeast sediment at the bottom of the glass. Thick, quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma of tangy wheat, banana- crackery, with a dry, almost medicinal chalkiness. Sour, tangy body, lactic, with a light lemony fruitiness. Earthy and estery. Not much depth; the initial flavors simply fade away on the palate. Interesting, unique beer. Tmoney99 (4652), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Sep 17, 2007 Bottle from Keg Liqour. Poured hazy yellow color with a large frothy white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Moderate wheat sour fruit aroma. Light to medium body. Light sour fruit flavor with a light sour finish of moderate duration. Interesting, not my style. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Sep 16, 2007 A Mes rate:
Bottle at LCRBM3. Stunned at how well rated this is. Didn’t even come close to working for me. Pale as hell, looks almost like a perry. Flavour totally dominated by vinegar. Barely detectable sweetness underneath. No balance and no character. Guess I need to re-rate this if I ever see it again. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Sep 15, 2007 Pour: lots of carbonation and suspended yeast. Head: thick, creamy, offwihte. Aroma: wheat, tart, hops. Flavor: tart, wheat, banana, some spice. Palate:lively. Finish: tart. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Sep 13, 2007 Appearance: Pours a hazy yellow body with a thick white head.
Smell: Aroma of sour wheat and tart lemon with a noticeable DMS character that smells distinctly of pot stewed veggies.
Taste: Faint, soft wheat flavors with a splash of lemon juice and merely a hint of sweetness. The DMS is much, much lighter - like adding an asparagus swizzle stick. Suspiciously refreshing finish that’s both lightly sour and salty.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Soft carbonation.
Drinkability: Not so bad, really. In fact, it’s so tasty, I just HAD to tell the world! Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Sep 11, 2007 Milky, dull golden coloured pour. Lactic AND lemony nose make for a more complex acidity than most. Authentic salty, celery notes. Pretty straight on berliner weiss. Melony, fruity, yogurty nuances. I must say it remains pretty restrained in its acidity. It’s not that tasty, I don’t quite understand such high scores even though it’s from Weihenstephaner. Still, it tastes fresh and presents all the expected characteristics and makes use of all its ingredients. Well done. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Sep 11, 2007 Bottle - Pours a hazy straw color with a two finger thick white head. Aroma is light grain and yeast (banana). Flavor is tart lemon. Not too tart though. No lingering sourness on the palate. Light to medium body. This beer was a pleasant suprise. I was expecting something like a Flemish Sour. Instead, got a real nice drinkable beer.
