Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

A thick-bodied pour of a glowing sunshine yellow. Wheat aromas of brown sugar on bananas and cloves, though musty and basement-like. Rather normal and unremarkable with a few hints of obscure spices. Taste is simple and sprightly while very cold. A warm tartness of baked green apples and an insane lemonade sweetness form the basic dimensions eventually. A kind of quiet animalistic stink in a cloud of bacterial vapor. Strange. At some moments the complex chorus of citrus and funk begins to ring loud and clear, while at others the tone is a simple, still hum of old lemon water. This is mostly relative to temperature, and more than most, this one hits an ideal spot somewhere in the middle, before and after which it doesn’t seem quite right. Finishes with tart and sugary apple and kiwi sensations. Rather massive acidity. Pretty much spot on for serious heat. Thanks Andy!

Clear yellow, white head fades fast, big bubbles. Honestly resembles Bud, I can’t help it. Aroma light, a bit of grain, faint funk, and dust, interesting. Sour fruity apple flavor over a wheat base. Refreshing, gentle bacterial funk. Very refreshing, a bit of lemon on the finish. Like a less agressive lambic. Nice.

What a treat it has been to enjoy to world class beers these past two days after a string of middling to mediocres. This one pours a hazy yellow color that is as beautiful as any sunset when held to light. The large white sherbert punch head forces me to wait for one agonizing minute before I can lift the glass to my lips. Of course that forces me to spend more time sniffing which is a pleasure in its own right. The lasting impression is very lemony but there’s a quick burst of of sweeter heffe like banana in the beginning and an almost Saison like funk at the end. It’s truly an amazingly flavorful and rather light beer that I plan on enjoying all summer long.

Hazy straw colored, with a big white head that diminishes quickly. Interesting nose--sweet, fairly bready, with a twinge of tartness and maybe just a hint of bubblegum. Nice, quick biting tartness gives way to a complex cereal flavor--like good granola or meusli. A bit too effervescent.

Lovely, lovely beer. Lactic acid tang, sourdough bread and unripe small grapes in the flavor, bready yeast in the nose, lemony essence filing your nostrils. Heavenly body when you swirl, which you should do immediately - practically velvet. Fantastic Berliner Weiss.

Bottle… RBSG 07… Murky, straw-colored ale with no real head. The nose is of lemon oil, orange peel and green banana with undercurrents of white pepper and white bread. Tart flavor with nowhere near the acidity of the Fitgers Champagne of the North, which I tried earlier in the evening. There is plenty of rich pale and wheat malt and fruity esters to dumb down the pungency, while never overriding or disgracing the beer’s acidic nature. Medium to full-bodied with a lightly creamy, then astringent mouthfeel and lively carbonation. As if threatened and attempting to defend it’s honor, the acidity fights back to provide a lengthy, crisp, sharp-tasting finish. Kudos to SoLan for bringing this fine brew from way down in Florida!

500ml bottle. Aroma is full of pale grains, wheat and citric tartness, with a background of straw, lemon and some faint grassy notes. Lightly hazy pale golden color with a subsiding, slight head of white. Predominantly lactic and sour flavor profile, moderately acidic and highly refreshing, with suggestions of freshly-squeezed lemons, faint lime and a light wash of wheat grains, yeast character and spiciness. Palate is properly spritzy, dry and quenching with a light body. Rather high in alcohol for the style at 5%, but that fact doesn’t seem to detract whatsoever as it remains supremely quenching. Very nice rendering.

This blew the DFH berliner weisse away. Hazy golden, moderate head with good lacing and retention. Aroma is grass, wheat, lemons, hefe notes. Medium to light body with a tart finish. A cool take on the style.
