Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pour is cloudy yellow with an enormous white fluffy head. A few floaties too. Aroma is lemon, grass, hay, sour wheat, and funk. Flavor is sour, wheaty, yeasty, barnyard-like, lemon, and some green grape. Very effervescent mouthfeel. Flavor is crisp, this beer is incredibly drinkable. Perfect summer/warm weather beer. very pleseant.

500ml bottle from ucusty - thanks! About time I rated this baby. Clear straw with a very fizzy white head. Scads of carbonation bubbles. Sour wheat nose, a bit acidic. Tart wheaty flavor, seems to have a sweet streak. I found this to be insanely drinkable - I finished my first glass in maybe two minutes. Delish!

Wheat style, somewhat hazy. Pale straw. No head. Yeast aroma, some fruitiness. Honey? Sour, but far from lambic. No alcohol or hop balance. Not quite just a sour drink; some beer taste, which is not as bad as it may sound. light body, slightly oily. Fresh. Good for summer. Wife does not disagree - but not Hoegarden ;) NOTE: Mixer sirup not needed - drink from the bottle. Purchased at New Beer Distributors for $5 in New York.

Seemed to have a little too much carbonation to it. Yellow-gold hue with a white head that faded fast. Astringent aroma which at times did seem fruity but overall it was astringent. Flavor was similar initially it did have a nice ester twang to it but it got tired some after a while. My first of this style. Finish was moderately dry.

Bottle at City Beer in SF, first I’ve rated of the style I think. Golden color with a white head and high carbonation apparent. Aroma of wheat and lemon/other sour fruits. Flavor of wheat with lemony tartness and sour grapes and apples. Sharp, crisp palate with a pleasant astringency. Not too sour. Refreshing.

My first Berliner and I think it is pretty good. A light golden beer with a metallic taste and a sour finish.

This bubbly golden beer poured with a decent off-white head and a yeasty aroma. There is a sweet wheat flavor with a typical sourish finish. It’s very fruity and tasty.
