Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bright gold appearance with a tiny, gray head and sparce lacing. Aroma of wheat and tart fruit, thinking lemons and green apples. Wheaty, astringent taste; sour, but not in the same vein as a Flemish sour. This one is unique, as if a spritzy white wine had started to turn. Dry, medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel. Lingering, fruity, finish. A real palate cleanser.

Pale gold pour with a big fluffy head and lots of carbonation. Aroma of wheat, grapes, some dusty, earthiness. Flavor is lightly tart and fruity, some lactic tartness and yeast. Great, effervescent mouthfeel. Cool to try an authentic Berliner Weiss, but I like the new glarus version more.

1 pint .9 fl oz bottle. Pours a cloudy, yellow-gold body with a big, bubbly and fizzy, pure white head that dissipates quickly and surprisingly leaves no lacing. Very pretty at first, but almost looks like piss after the head fades. Disappointing. Aroma is initially wheat and lemons. Some other sweet fruits show up after a few sniffs such as cherries and lime. Lots of sweet tart citrus. Slightly yeasty. Flavor is very bright, sour citrus. Wheat and honey too. Some of the cherry shows up in there as well as the Sprite-like lemon-lime. Palate is light and very fizzy. Not a whole lot of aftertasate. Overall, a very tart beer. Almost drinks like a soda. Not a bad flavor, just not really my style. Too fizzy and acidic. Interesting to say the least...

Bottle from Red, White and Brew in Mt. Holly, NJ. Pours a cloudy yellow body with large, white, foamy head. Aroma is banana and spice. Taste is sharp and refreshing with a small note of tart. Flavor also has some wheat and malt, nice carbonated mouth feel adds to an inviting palate.
