Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottled. An unclear golden beer with a white head. The aroma is sweet with light acidic notes combined with notes of malt, which also pretty much sums up the flavor. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Been looking for this Berliner Weisse for ages. Picked up this bottle at John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA, and opened with Tom at the "What this town needs is an IHOP" tasting. Pale gold, bunches of clean noisy white bubbles. Soft lemon cake and corn bread aroma. Gentle lemon snap to the flavor. Simple, refreshing. But more DMS, and much less funk and complexity than I was hoping for. Will have to try an older bottle.

The Rotten Apple tasting. A slightly cloudy golden beer with a white head. Sour aroma with some fruit. Flavor is tart and wheaty. Apples. Smooth feel. Not a favored style of mine but a good example of the style.

Pretty good. Has a nice, slightly tart aroma with notes of citrus. The flavor is tart, wheaty, and crisp. Very refreshing.

The beer is moderately malty with a light bread aroma. The beer also smells a bit like hay mixed with some citrus fruit juice, mainly lemon. It pours with an average white head that is white in color. The initial flavor is moderately sweet and finishes sour. It is light according to the palate with a dry texture and the carbonation is fizzy. The finish feel of this beer is a little watery.

bottle in trade from koopa. Thanks! Pours a rich cloudy yellow-ish golden orange color with a short lived fizzy white head. Smell is wheaty with some lemony tartness to it. Taste is very wheaty with a touch of clove spice tucked away in the end along with some lemony citrus tones to it and a light tartness. Medium to light mouthfeel and highly carbonated and prickly. Very enjoyable.

Straw yellow in color with a good sized white head. Aroma is tart with notes of lemon, orange, spices and yeast. Taste is the same with less tartness.

16.9oz bottle-pours a foamy white head and cloudy yellow color. Aroma is perfumy, husky grain/bread, banana. As the beer warmed, the aroma did become lemon dominanat. Taste is tart/acidic lemon right up front. Mid and after taste is tart/acidic/lemon/fruit, wheat-slightly sweet, yeasty. OK effervescence. Not my taste but enjoyable. Thanks to emacgee for picking this out.
