Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

The aroma is sour wheat, sour kraut, barley, and yeast. The appearance is hazy with gold color and a nice head. The flavor is sour but not overly so and like the aroma. The palate is thin but just right. Overall it’s good.

Bottle: Pours a hazy golden with a fizzy fading head. (When you swirl the bottle and disturb the sediment it gets even more murky and cloudy) Tart, earthy aroma. Light hint of barnyard, sharp quality wheat malt, lactic notes, sour apple skins, and yeast. Lively, high volume carbonation. Crisp body with a nice wheat malt presence. Tart fruity notes of sour apple skins and a slightly vinous quality. Lactic hints, and light yeasty notes. This is a great thirst quencher and extremely well crafted example of the style.

500ml bottle. Wow. Very pale pour with tons of bubbles and a lovely white, crisp head. Nose is deep and complex, banana esters and lactic tartness, vanilla and a hint of cocoa. Supremely refreshing, slight tartness still significant in the flavor, with a very wheaty and dry finish. Incredibly drinkable; I could session this stuff all day. Brilliantly done. I looked forward to the other "historic signature series" brews mentioned on the label.

The beer departs the 500ml bottle a hazy light gold, the head monstrous in size, a bright creamy white, and it fades slowly, leaving the lace a thick and tight sheet upon the glass. Nose has a sweet and sour tone, fresh, crisp, spicy and mouth watering to say the least. Start is sweet with grain, tart at the back with the top light to medium in feel. Finish has a modest acidity, the sweet and sour taste continues to the end, quite dry and a good representative to the style.

[586-20070908] 1pt0.9floz @ Sourfest 2007 (Buffalo, NY, w/ rudolf, frylock, IPFreely, jerc, swoopjones). Pineapple syrup aroma with light banana, wheat and petrol note. Hazy, yellow light orange body with a quick foamy white head. Sweet pineapple wheat flavour with lightly sour and leafy notes. Medium body. Very fruity, nice.

Appearance: Pours a hazy yellow body with a thick white head. Smell: Aroma of sour wheat and tart lemon with a noticeable DMS character that smells distinctly of pot stewed veggies. Taste: Faint, soft wheat flavors with a splash of lemon juice and merely a hint of sweetness. The DMS is much, much lighter - like adding an asparagus swizzle stick. Suspiciously refreshing finish that’s both lightly sour and salty. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Soft carbonation. Drinkability: Not so bad, really. In fact, it’s so tasty, I just HAD to tell the world!

Bottle: Big wheaty aroma with lemon, clove, and a touch of grass. It pours a cloudy yellow with a moderate white head that lasts a minute or so. The flavor has lots of mildly sour lemon up front with some faint banana. The finish is lightly acidic along with some grassy hops and a touch of smoke. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin and soft but the carbonation is rather lively, but not prickly. I see myself drinking a lot of this during the summer. Very tastey and refreshing.

Pours to a very hazy light straw colored body with a thin white head. The aroma is quite nice. Sour fruit loops. It’s very fruity with bananas, kiwi, sour mash, cookies. The flavor is light and crisp. Tart lactic acid, star fruit like, kiwi. The palate is tart and refreshing. Quite a good Berliner Weisse.
