Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

16.9 ounce bottle shared by grant. Sweet, sugary, herbal, floral aroma with plenty of lemon citrus notes. Aroma is not overly sour or acetic, which is unlike other samples of this style that I have had. Moderately hazy blonde body with small, feeble, quickly dissipating, listless head. No lacing at all. Starts tart, lemony, and sour before it becomes a little grainy and cereal-like. A few yeasty banana esters make a cameo. Finishes with a nice, light sweetness. Pretty straight-forward and drinkable. Not as intensely sour as other Berliner Weisse beers that I have had.

Very clean and uniform snow white head on a hazy straw yellow body with notable carbonation. Aroma is like lemons, pears, and honeysuckle, with some moderate bacterial funk. Has nice, dry wheaty depth in the flavor with medium, lemony sourness. Includes notes of grass, pear and dry honey. Infinitely quenching, but with ample character to make it interesting. Excellent achievement and great beer for summer! Results from bottle-conditioning with bacteria will be interesting.

Bottle. Bottle from State Line. Aroma is a big, bold citrus with bready undertones and some sour tire air. A very loud, very active pour, heavy pale yellow with an ephemeral head – couldn’t even catch a hue. Taste is robust, sour with some vague fruity notes and light Brut Champagne in there, too. Some (insert fruit here – pomegranate? grapefruit. mango, too?) funk. Balanced! Dry and our but not overwhelmingly so, not overbearing but very flavorful. Dryness really helps the salivation, this can be drunk in great quantities. Fruitiness pushes the aftertaste into tropical cocktail territory. One of the more interesting beers of this summer!

Murky, yeasty yellow-orange body with strong carbonation emanating from the yeast sediment at the bottom of the glass. Thick, quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma of tangy wheat, banana- crackery, with a dry, almost medicinal chalkiness. Sour, tangy body, lactic, with a light lemony fruitiness. Earthy and estery. Not much depth; the initial flavors simply fade away on the palate. Interesting, unique beer.
