Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting - Lightly hazed yellow, fizzy white head. Nose held delicate notes of sour banana, candle wax, and lemon poppyseed muffins. Flavor is softly sour and tart with wheaty fruit-like tones from start to finish. Light bodied, soft carbonation, quick drying, citric finish. Highly drinkable...

This blew the DFH berliner weisse away. Hazy golden, moderate head with good lacing and retention. Aroma is grass, wheat, lemons, hefe notes. Medium to light body with a tart finish. A cool take on the style.

Bottle. Pours hazy yellow with white head. The aroma has lots of hay, some acidic zest, orange, and a hint of barnyard. The flavor is tart and acidic right away, but not puckeringly so. Some sweet, citrusy notes are there, too. It then becomes very herbal and some malt tones start to work their way in. It finishes slightly musty with some yeast and spicy wheat, but still leaves a tingling acidic feel in the mouth. This is very refreshing, really.

500ml bottle from ucusty - thanks! About time I rated this baby. Clear straw with a very fizzy white head. Scads of carbonation bubbles. Sour wheat nose, a bit acidic. Tart wheaty flavor, seems to have a sweet streak. I found this to be insanely drinkable - I finished my first glass in maybe two minutes. Delish!

Hazy golden with a lingering white head. Lightly tart aroma with a mild grainy malt sweetness. Light/medium bodied. Good flavors of bready light wheat malts, with lightly tart apple skin, then a mild pit fruit sweetness to finish.
