Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

1 pint .9 fl oz bottle. Pour is a slightly cloudy yellow gold with some bubbles and a big white head slowly settling head. Aroma is initially wheat with some sweet fruitiness (cherries?). Taste is much brighter, tarter, and sweeter than I would have imagined. Taste is cherries, lime, lemon and finishing with a bit of wheat texture. This is my first beer of this style, and once I got over the shock of the taste, quite enjoyed it. A very tasty summer beer.

Large white head, good retention and lace. Nose is tart, spicey, citrusy, lemony and yeasty. Body is lightly medium with a tangy feel. Lightly doughy malts, citrus, juicey. Finish is dry, fruity and refreshing. Nicely tangy and tart. Groovy little brew!

Cloudy golden-yellow color with a dissipating white head. Aroma is subtly-banana-ey with some tart citrus, wheat/assorted sweet grains and maybe some light spices. Taste is tartly citrus with some smooth and sweet wheat flavors. Nice tingly mouthfeel and overall very refreshing. Probably the best you can find in the original style, but I can’t say its much above average overall.

Cloudy golden but very bright. Huge white head, fades, returns with a quick swirl. Lactis sourness up front, lemongrass, and faint yeasty wheat character. Flavor pretty much on par with aroma. Lactic tartness, sour lemon, light yeasty/wheat. Very soft mouthfeel, clean. Can see where people might mistake this for watered down. Very easy drink. Perfect summer session.

I didn’t really care for this one. Probably just don’t like the style. Pours a cloudy light yellow. Sour lemon aroma. Tastes like lemonade. Thin and carbonic.

Tried at Stuffed Sandwich for $7. A little steep, but I’ve been eager to try this for some time now. They sell it at HWC, but I haven’t been motivated to try it. I like sours, so I’m going to rate this higher than normal. Sourness is very mild. lower than I expected, actually lower than the 2006 St Ambrois barleywine I had yesterday. Light beer. Yellow color. soda like carbonation: Large bubbles floating to the top and popping. Smell is somewhat BMC-ish. Nice feel on the tongue. Easy to drink. Pretty decent. Kind of like a well made pale lager.

Bottle. Poured a hazy golden pale color with thin head. Funky aroma - sweaty gym socks, lots of funk. Flavor is funky hops, bananas, very sweet. A nice wheat character present. This was a ncie after dinner drink, very enjoyable. A little complexity going on.

Bottle. Pours a hazy and very carbonated yellow with some chunky floaters and a huge 4 finger snow white head that faded quickly. The nose is fruity with spice and light hops. Taste is sour wheat, sweet citrus and yeast with light fruity hops in the finish. Medium prickly mouth feel. Good brew, light and refreshing.
