Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

(10/15/08) Bottle at Map Room in Chicago. Clear golden color with a medium white head that falls rather quickly. Aroma of fruits (some apricot, pineapple and citrus), wheat and a bit of lactic acid. Sourish flavor with fruits, citrus, some wheaty tartness and yogurt notes. Medium-bodied with very strong carbonation. A good refreshing beer but not as good as real Berliner Weisses (Schultheiss and Kindl).

Bottle thanks to GMCC2181. Pours a cloudy light yellow with white fizzy head. Aroma of citrus and white grape, some wheat. Flavor has a refreshing tartness, some citrus, white grape, wheat, lemon grass. Mouth feel is light body with high fizzy carbonation. Overall pretty tasty....

Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow gold with a fizzy white head. Aroma of lots of spices, yeast. Smells like a witbier. Flavor of initial carbonation, yeast/bread, spices, with a slightly sour finish. Not as sour/tart as I’d expected from a berliner weisse and a little bit spicier. Still quite tasty and very drinkable.

Wow! My first Berliner Weisse and it has my interest peaked. Strong pinot blanc aroma with some breadiness. Pours like golden champagne, large bubbles (which usually I hate) and an incredible fizzy thin white head. I think the pour fits the style exceptionally. I haven’t had any other Berliner Weisses before but I really like this. The sourness is very understated in the finish, could use some more, however, it builds as you drink. Medium dryness. Really tastes like a tart pinot grigio. Very smooth carbonation for the size of the bubbles. Forget High-Life... this is the champagne of beers. P.S. Sea Salt & Vinegar chips are a great pairing for this.

This is delicious. Fruity aroma and taste (peaches, mostly, with a little banana). Finishes with a little tangy acidity. Tremendously refreshing.

The Rotten Apple tasting. A slightly cloudy golden beer with a white head. Sour aroma with some fruit. Flavor is tart and wheaty. Apples. Smooth feel. Not a favored style of mine but a good example of the style.

Sour bananas and citrus, some funk. Pours cloudy yellow with a white head. Tart banana, sour citrus fruits like kumquats, sweet and dry finish. Very refreshing! Very creamy mouthfeel.
