Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

This is delicious. Fruity aroma and taste (peaches, mostly, with a little banana). Finishes with a little tangy acidity. Tremendously refreshing.

Aroma is some funk or barrel with a nice crisp tart sourness. Taste seems to have a bit more alcohol than it states. Still very good clean crisp taste with a very nice tartness.

16.9 oz bottle. Clear golden yellow with active carb and a puffy white head. Nose is lemon, mild sour milk and wheat. Tangy with muted carb and a clean wheaty body. Taste is lemon-lime and green banana. Refreshing with restrained tartness.

1st half of the bottle w/o the lees. Pours a slightly hazed, bright pale yellow color w/ a full yet short lived spritzy froth that reduces to a full, sliky canopy. Aromas of banana cream. Medium nectar w/ ample residual effers. Tastes like a tart hefe weissen. Good banana spice w/ a defined tartness. The tart component stabs quick and deep yet is very enjoyable as it recedes softly to a murmur. The finsh is long w/ a lingerng tart tingling. Highly recommended. 2nd half with the lees in the glass. Pours an opaque tawny yellow color with tart aromas. The flavor profile is less enjoyable to me this way as it becomes the full fledged tart/sour style it was meant to be. At this point all the wheat flavors are gone left with nothing but sour citric acid. I really do enjoy the pour w/o the lees far better and I would drink it again that way.

Bottle picked up from WestLakeview Liquors. Pours a hazy wheat yellow color with a white head. Sour notes right off some wheat and yeast. Flavors of sour apples and lemon with that creamy doughy wheat rolling around my mouth. A few herbal notes coming in with a well balanced lactic tart finish. Interesting style, I’ll definitely be picking more of this up. And cheers to West Lakeview for grabbing these hard to find German beers.

My 500th rating! thanks dsnowden for the bottle! Opaque golden/yellow color. Aroma is very fruity, peaches, and mango, and banana, and some wheat funk. Flavour is sour, and tart, not lambic sour, but still there is a sourness. And i’m getting the fruit again in the flavour, with a nice hefe finish. Wow. i really like this stuff, great summer beer. I wish i could get this on a regular basis!

Hazy yellow. 1cm dense white head. Nose is wheat, lemon, mild sourness, lightly musty, and some graininess. Flavor is more sour with some mild lemon and lots of wheaty graininess. Refreshing. Medium body, crisp carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle. Aroma fruity (citrus, bold pear), mildly tart, wheaty. More tartness introduced in the flavor, mingles well with the sweet, increasingly complex fruits. Pretty dry, but not bone dry. Very nice.
