Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

What a treat it has been to enjoy to world class beers these past two days after a string of middling to mediocres. This one pours a hazy yellow color that is as beautiful as any sunset when held to light. The large white sherbert punch head forces me to wait for one agonizing minute before I can lift the glass to my lips. Of course that forces me to spend more time sniffing which is a pleasure in its own right. The lasting impression is very lemony but there’s a quick burst of of sweeter heffe like banana in the beginning and an almost Saison like funk at the end. It’s truly an amazingly flavorful and rather light beer that I plan on enjoying all summer long.

Pours pale golden with no head. The nonse is full and complex. The flavor is sweet on the tip of the tongue, with subtle mid to finish.

Large frothy white head, cloudy pale yellow body. Sweet wheaty lemon aroma. Flavor is a little sour wheat with some juicy fruit popscicles. Very full flavor. Nice combination of sweet and sour wheat... nicely rounded and balanced with some cherry too. Good stuff.

bottle....translucent light golden brown pour with a thin white head.....very fruity nose with a lot of citrus notes. a little bit of tartness.....a very lively and bubbly mouthfeel which then gives way to the citrus tart and then finishes off pretty dry. some acidity there as well....a very refreshing berliner.

Pours a hazy golden color with a massive white head that shrinks with time. Nose is sour and wheat like with some bread. Taste is wheat lemon citrus and finishes really tart and sour. A very interesting style but the acidity and sourness makes it a bit hard to quaff. Not bad.

A clear gold pour, thin to no head. Apple, biscuit, and slight sourness in the aroma. flavors of tart green apples, wheat, bread, lemon zest, and sourness. Highly carbonated with lots of small bubbles. Very "spritzy".

Been looking for this Berliner Weisse for ages. Picked up this bottle at John’s Grocery in Iowa City, IA, and opened with Tom at the "What this town needs is an IHOP" tasting. Pale gold, bunches of clean noisy white bubbles. Soft lemon cake and corn bread aroma. Gentle lemon snap to the flavor. Simple, refreshing. But more DMS, and much less funk and complexity than I was hoping for. Will have to try an older bottle.

Lovely caramel yellow colour. No head. Nice golden sediment settling in the glass. A peppery-orange, zesty- gasoline aroma with a sour-salty flavour with a wonderful lemon finish
