Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours a hazy light gold with a two finger head of fine white bubbles that diminishes to a thin ring clinging to the sides of the glass. The aroma is of light apple and lemon with a backing of sour wheat. Light to medium bodied with thousands of tiny bubbles enveloping your tongue, it finishes somewhat tart and dry. The first Berliner Weisse that I’ve sampled, I found this beer quite refreshing. The flavor is a nice blend of effervescent wheat malt and citrus notes with a pleasantly tart and moderately dry finish. I’d be curious to see what this is like with the traditional syrup added, but it’s quite tasty in its pure form.

I thought this was a fantastic representation of the style. Much better than others I have tried. An interesting blend of tartness and sour, but extremely well balanced malt background. I wish it could have had a little more sourness, but very refreshing.

Bottle from Sam’s. Nose is very tart, though not in a Lambic way. Sweet and grainy with a lactic acidity. Quite different, really and nice. Pale cloudy blonde withe a disappearing head. Very tart with a bit of a caramelized finish. It’s interesting because I always used to taste that caramelly richness and never knew what it was until I started to brew and now know it to be the decoction. Very tart and different. Nice.

Pours a cloudy golden with a white head. There is an acidic-sour like aroma. Flavor is slight tart and has a light fruit background, with a lighly acidic finish. Overall did not have quite the pucker power that I was under the impression a Berlner weisse would have. Still a decent brew.

500ml bottle. Hazy straw color, little white head. Citrusy dry aroma, a little banana maybe as well. Very dry, slight tartness, very smooth finish with vey little aftertaste.

Pours out a cloudy light golden straw color with a small quickly fading head. Aroma has some citrus and some vinous aromas. Taste is very light and refreshing, but at the same time complex. Sour notes mix with some banana, bread/grain and some nice funky tartness. Very drinkable and a great summer beer.
