Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottle. Cloudy pale yellow pour, with a quickly diminishing head. Aroma is very spicy, with some banana and coriander in there. Sour taste, nothing crazy, but it’s sour. Citrus, coconut, coriander, zest. Warm, carbonated, and drinkable. It’s good.

Wow poured a cloudy golden color with good head and nice nice lacing. Aroma was of bananas cloves something sweet and lemons. Flavor was much the same tart lemons and spices. Good stuff for sure.

Nicely tart and exceptionally quenching, I hope this style continues to be revitalized, and become more readily available. Golden yellow color, soapy head and streaky lacing with tight carbonation. Applesauce and lime aromas followed by saltine crackers and sugar cookies. Zesty, lightly sour and easy to throw back. Green apple, light peach and lemon peel fruit flavors with dry wheat and grass. Good profile, very calming and approachable.

16oz bottle obtained in trade with dchmela. Hazy dull orange color with no head. Musty apple barn like aromas with yeast and pear like notes. The flavor is like old apple cider mixed with dry champagne. Fruity flavors are subdued but there and mostly pear like. Semi-tart light and refreshing. This was good. However, I do like the fruitier presence in Fiesta Peche.

2008 Flour City Brewfest. Yellow pour with a large white head. Aroma is dry with some hops and light citrus. Flavor becomes crisp with citrus, and some light hops. Nice.

Bottle. Thanks to richlikebeer. Clear golden yellow color with a white soapy head. Lots of nose! Aroma of apple, yeast, ...tart. Taste is slightly sour with apple, yeast, and some spice. Very nice beer!

Pours a cloudy golden color with a white head. Aroma is of hay, floral hops, lemon, banana, and yeast. Sour taste up front with lemon and banana that finishes with the hay and floral hops. Much better then I was expecting with this one. I’m glad I picked this one up.

Bottle. Pours a murky pale yellow with a white head; it looks like cider. Big wheat aromas with a lactic note. Powerfully lactic and sour. Prominent wheat flavors, lemongrass and a banana note I’d assume is from the yeast but the lactic notes really have a stranglehold on the flavors. Surprisingly drinkable- the first Berliner Weisse I’ve been able to finish (not sure if that bodes well for the beer though).
