Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

hazy, yellow body with no head..slightly cloudy pour..citrus in the nose with hints of bread, dough, touches of spice, banana, and nutmeg..flavor of dust, sour must, green apple, bile (non-offensive if thats possible)--and upon reading the label this is clearly the lactic acid aspect of it--soft palate, cask-like...overall nicely done

Bottle. Thanks to richlikebeer. Clear golden yellow color with a white soapy head. Lots of nose! Aroma of apple, yeast, ...tart. Taste is slightly sour with apple, yeast, and some spice. Very nice beer!

Golden colored with a frothy white head. Cereal grains, honey, and fruit loops cereal in the aroma. Light tartness, hints of citrus and some more fruit loops in the flavor...also hints of banana and diacetyl.

Nicely tart and exceptionally quenching, I hope this style continues to be revitalized, and become more readily available. Golden yellow color, soapy head and streaky lacing with tight carbonation. Applesauce and lime aromas followed by saltine crackers and sugar cookies. Zesty, lightly sour and easy to throw back. Green apple, light peach and lemon peel fruit flavors with dry wheat and grass. Good profile, very calming and approachable.

16.9oz bottle. Hazy straw color with a very effervescent off-white head that dissipates quickly. Really unique funky aroma, wheat, lemon, yeast, and lemongrass. Flavor is just as unique. lemon and yeast are again prominant. really lactic finish. This beer is really interesting.

Pours a hazed light golden yellow with barely any thin white head. From appearances, it practically screams banana esters. Sharp nose lacks banana. Full of lemon and lactobacillis. A bit of citrusy apple wheatness. Lively slightly creamy mouthfeel with relatively low CO2. Not watery, but not thick. A big tart wheaty lemony lactobacillis flavor. A sharp almost herbal element. Really quick in leaving the tongue in flavor. I wish I could find more examples of the style.

500 ml bottle, purchased last November, in tumbler. Pale cloudy orange with quickly dissipating loud fizzy white head. Tart grassy aroma. Tart, pink lemonadey, chalky flavor. Dry finish with lingering cloying sweet citrus. Medium body, high carbo. I think there’s a reason why some beers are beer styles have mostly disappeared. Kinda yucky, but without the character and complexity of a good geueze. Extra points for historical value...retried on tap at Ebenezar Kezar. Same result.

i have to maintain my stance on this beer style as being totally retarded and unnecessary. this probably the most drinkable berliner weisse which doesn’t mean anything. still a better style than lambics.
