Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Hazy straw colored, with a big white head that diminishes quickly. Interesting nose--sweet, fairly bready, with a twinge of tartness and maybe just a hint of bubblegum. Nice, quick biting tartness gives way to a complex cereal flavor--like good granola or meusli. A bit too effervescent.

Poured from a 500ml bottle and served in a tumbler. This beer poured a hazy golden with a thick, fizzy head of off-white foam and a ton of dancing carbonation bubbles. Solid retention, leaving behind some decent lace. The aroma of the beer was a simple blend of wheat, tart lemon, and grass. The flavor was similar but also displayed a nice crispness and a moderate sourness. Some lime and peach also show up in the finish. The mouthfeel was crisp and light-bodied. Highly carbonated. Fruity and refreshing. An excellent beer for a hot day.

Pours a light straw color with thin white head. Aroma is of tart fruit and some tangy wheat and some yeast esters. Flavor is much the same but this is a refreshing and subtle Berliner Weiss which is more enjoyable compared to others I’ve sampled. Solid.

Great funky horse blanket & hay barnyard scent, with a little doughy yeast. Beautiful looking beer with one of the best white thick heads I’ve seen in some time. Color is golden straw & the beer is largely clear (with the exception of the final pour which is quite cloudy). The beer has tons of bubbles which is very attractive. I’m not sure I could ask much more out of the taste, it is very sour, very dry, and slightly fruity with great hints of cherry & apple. Palate is sharp with a great big mouthfeel (like a standard Weisse). A very good beer.

Bottle, no syrup. Tart, sour lemony aroma some spicy rich notes. Pours with a big foamy off white head on a just slightly hazy straw yellow colored body. Quite tart flavor that puckers the mouth with a citric character. Very thin perfect mix of refreshing tartness and carbonation bite.

Cheers Sebastian. Half-liter bottle pours a dull, hazy yellow-gold with nice white head. Nose of lemons, oranges, spring flowers and a yogurty edge. Lightly sweet taste, tangy, just a bit tart with just a touch of bitterness. Incredibly refreshing. Ought to be drunk by the gallon.
