Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Great funky horse blanket & hay barnyard scent, with a little doughy yeast. Beautiful looking beer with one of the best white thick heads I’ve seen in some time. Color is golden straw & the beer is largely clear (with the exception of the final pour which is quite cloudy). The beer has tons of bubbles which is very attractive. I’m not sure I could ask much more out of the taste, it is very sour, very dry, and slightly fruity with great hints of cherry & apple. Palate is sharp with a great big mouthfeel (like a standard Weisse). A very good beer.

This is the first Berliner Weisse I have had and I really like this style! Pours an apple juice color, little head and bubbly carbonation. Smell is bready and slightly fruity with apples. Taste is totally unexpected sour, fruity and refreshing. I love this beer.

Bottle: I have only had one other berliner weisse but I really enjoyed it, which made me seek out this one. The 1809, did not dissappoint me! The bottle has a history lesson written on it and its uses.... Cool in a dorky way... But on to the beer itself. Poured a cloudy/murky yellow color, big head of course. Smells fruity. Taste is pleasently smooth. A tartiness that I really like. Fruits and spices also thrown in. Lots of subdued lemon in the beer taste. The texture is light and easy to drink. Lots of carbonation but it didnt taste that way. Perfect for a hot summer day. I will never drink a nice glass of lemonade any more this beer will takes it place!....Overall a beer that I would recommend and would buy agian. A great example of what this type of beer should taste like! DAS GOOD BEER!

Bottle. Yeast is the strongest component of this beer. Smells of cobwebs start right out with perfume, citrus and hay in the background. There is also a vegetable note and the hint of rancid fruit salad. Color is hazy yellow with no head after five seconds. Taste is both acidic and acetic, start to finish. Palate is nice and crisp, light watery with a fizzy carbonation. This beer would be best used to flush down a heavy German dinner, like a wurst assortment.

Hazy yellow orange pour with a fizzy short lasting white head. Aroma of lights fruits, yeast, light sour elements, and a bit of pale malt. Flavor was of crisp green apple skin...tart and lightly fruity and sour with musty yeast and pale malt evening out the equation. Fairly light body yet heavy in flavor and texture...sort of creamy yet carbonated well...malty and fruity in the front with a tart/fruity/sour...and almost hearty finish. Really neat stuff.

.5L bottle. I don’t have a "bowl" style glass so I used a Trappist glass which seems like a similar shape. Lightly hazed green-gold liquid topped by a half inch of foam that settles down to a thin capping. Smells of lemon, wheat, tart like a good saison. Crisp dry wheaty flavor, some lemon, a touch of sourness. Intense carbonation nips at the tongue and throat quickly scrubbing away any flavors that were just there. Definitely the best Berliner Weisse that I have had so far.

Bottle thanks to Ty5592. Poured a slightly hazy golden color with a moderate white head that diminished to a ring. Aroma of tart citrus and wheat. Dominant sour flavor with hints of citrus fruit and light wheat flavors on the finish. Pretty simple flavor profile, but it is refreshing. Easy to drink and crisp on the palate. Very nice beer that makes me proud of my German heritage. Thanks Ty, you are the man.

[Bottle] Pours hazy golden with a good white head. Aroma is yeast, wheat and light banana. Taste is quite sour, but doesn’t seem to mesh very well with the wheat and banana flavors. Medium-thin mouthfeel with a somewhat short finish. This is the first Berliner Weisse that I have tried, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I have to say that I was fairly underwhelmed by it.
